Last Sunday I had a very scary experience. I couldn’t find Jesus!!! After Mass I went to pray at the Blessed Sacrament chapel as I always do with my mother. But when we got there we noticed that the sanctuary lamp was not lit, which signals Our Lord’s presence in the tabernacle. So I assumed that Jesus was not in the tabernacle. Of course, most Catholics are ignorant of this fact and several people continued kneeling in prayer. So my mother and I started our search for Jesus. Next we went to the other altar where the Blessed Sacrament is usually reserved other than in the tabernacle. The candles were not lit there either! So finally we proceeded to the Lady Chapel where there is a tabernacle and the candle was lit there. I’m still inconclusive though of Christ being reserved in the Lady Chapel even though there is a tabernacle there and the candle was lit, I don’t know, it just seems a little strange, at least in my opinion to have the Blessed Sacrament reserved in three different places. So I prayed “Lord hear my prayer if You are hear in Your Sacrament or not” After I had finished praying my mother questioned a Eucharistic Minister about the event but he didn’t seem to really understand what we meant and said “The Eucharist is ALWAYS in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel” Still, I don’t know if He was because the candle was not lit. But now that I think back on it someone could have forgotten to light the candle or it could have burned out. But one thing this experience did give me was helping me understand what Our Lady and St. Joseph must have felt like when they could not find Our Lord as a Child.

This is why the doors to tabernacles which are empty must be left open.

I was there, too, Salvereginadude, on Sunday afternoon. Since the nice folks at the Cathedral almost always do things right, I was pretty certain that, since the tabernacle was closed, the lamp may have burned out without anyone noticing. But, just in case, I went to the Lady Chapel, too. The Blessed Sacrament is in the Lady Chapel all the time now, because daily Mass is being celebrated there until the work on the organ is finished.

Today (Monday), the lamp was lit again in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
