when i thought about him today, he’s not anything special, he preys on mans most basic flaws. he tempts with all the things that are so obvious… selfishness, sex, money, power, greed. he’s just real good at working the worse points of us humans.
but by no means is he a genius, it doesn’t take a genius to take the easy route, the easy route… hmmmm, just what his temptations offer… immediate gratification, basic sexual drives… he uses mans weakness against man… a typical bullly mentality., he’s a thug who uses the same modus operandi every generation, and we keep falling for his B.S. i wish i could just for a moment put my foot into his sorry, pathetic fallen rear.

just a rant.

I tend to disagree with you. Satan is a fallen angel. Angels are spiritual beings with intellects far superior to human intellects. The fact that he uses all the obvious temptations is more a poor reflection on humans who fall for it every time than on Satan’s lack of imagination.

On a practical note, Satan’s superior intellect is one of the reasons the saints advise us not to fight temptation, but to flee it.

I can see how you would think he isn’t that smart, because his ploys seem so simple. Think about credit card debt. Here is a 5000k limit in a little plastic card, no problem just pay later in minimum payments…

It often takes a genius to find the easy route.

Satan is also a very, very hard worker. He watches us constantly and figures out our weak spots. Porn, lust, food, anger, jealousy, ego, money, whatever - we’ll find the weak spot and exploit it. He’s always probing.

I highly recommend reading C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. Lewis had great insight into how de debbil operates.

True satan is smart, But GOD is smarter!
Christ won the victory, Satan does know this and he will try to ruin enough souls to not make it to Heaven just to get back at God.
We, however, are the ones with the Free Will to choose.
The question is this: Are WE (human beings) the Smart Ones?

go with God!

Satan is so decieving because most of the things he’s telling us are the truth with just the twinge of a lie. That’s what makes him so cunning i guess for lack of a better word.

ou know I think intelligence is often misunderstood.
Sometimes is it in eloquent simplicity that the greatest genius is found.

In other words “Do not underestimate the power of the dark side”.

If Satan is not that smart, and billions of humans fall for him all the time, what does that say about the human race?

Of course Satan’s a genius…as others said, he’s a fallen angel…and angels have very high intelligence. But, in NO way does that make him cool…I picture him being like one of those Dungeons and Dragons nerds who drink animal blood in their pathetically dorky rituals…after all, the occult is in his field, and he just happens to be the head nerd.

oh yes he is a genius. he was the brightest and most beautiful of the angels before his fall (or nosedive). and I can prove it. his most stunning achievement is successfully tempting the good, the converted using their own goodness. he uses good things, good impulses, good habits to pervert us into the sin of pride over our own goodness. he tempts us into excess of a good thing, such as penitential practices and even prayer, and he succeeds, he draws us into scrupulosity over practice of our faith and contrition for our sin, because he knows that is the way to concentrate our minds and hearts on ourselves and away from God. want proof? read the postings. all the good people who are using their own intellectual gifts, their own erudition about sacred scripture, their own spiritual growth through good faith habits as WEAPONS against those who disagree with them, and with their coreligionists. Without charity my dear friends all your knowledge of apologetics and industrious practice of good works availeth nothing. Please review your posts and replies, and before you click, ask yourself, have I responded in charity. I promise to do the same myself.

Yes. “Murder is no better than cards, if cards will do the trick.”
I don’t know where I’ve gotten as much spiritual mileage out of such a thin and entertaining volume as The Screwtape Letters. (And if you don’t read, John Cleese read it on audiotape.)
