I need Scripture that proves Satan was and still is an Angel I have a acquaintance that says that Satan was never a Angel strange thing is this guy is a Catholic (though a lapsed one).

First of all, he needs to stop thinking like a Sola Scriptura (scripture alone) fundamentalist and operating on the assumption that everything we need to know is explicitly stated in the Bible. The Bible, as you know, makes no such claim for itself and we should not fall into the trap of defending Catholic beliefs on a Sola Scriptura basis.

Second, while there is no Scripture verse that says “Satan was an angel,” there isn’t one that says he wasn’t, and several places it implies that he was cast out of heaven, such as in Revelation 12. It has been the constant teaching of the Church that this is the case.

From the Catechism:
**391 ** Behind the disobedient choice of our first parents lurks a seductive voice, opposed to God, which makes them fall into death out of envy.266 Scripture and the Church’s Tradition see in this being a fallen angel, called “Satan” or the “devil”.267 The Church teaches that Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: “The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own doing.”*268 *
266 Cf. Gen 3:1-5; Wis 2:24.
267 Cf Jn 8:44; Rev 12:9.
268 Lateran Council IV (1215): DS 800.

The Second Epistle of St. Peter the Apostle

  1. Chapter 2

    4
] For if God spared not the** angel**s that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment:

11] Whereas** angel**s who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment.

The Catholic Epistle of St. Jude the Apostle

    1. Chapter 1

      6
] And the** angel**s who kept not their principality, but forsook their own habitation, he hath reserved under darkness in everlasting chains, unto the judgment of the great day.

The Apocalypse of St. John the Apostle

      Chapter 12

      7
] And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his** angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angel**s:

9] And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who seduceth the whole world; and he was cast unto the earth, and his** angel**s were thrown down with him.

See the Apocalypse ( Revalations)Chap 12 v. 1 -10. Satan and all his Angels were cast out of heaven.

Acts 16 v. 16 -27 Paul drove an evil spirit away from a girl.

2ed Col 12:7

Lucifer was the leader of the highest level of the Angelic Choirs. He did not like that God was creating a universe and giving that universe to Jesus. Lucifer rebeled, he said NO, he wanted to be in charge of the universe. He had free will, intellence and freedom to act. God assigned St. Michael the Archangel to go to war with Lucifer. When Lucifer was defeated he was given a new name, then he was called Satan and his dominion was the air of the earth. God sent all the other rebelling angels to be with Satan. Now Satan is called the Devil by most and the evil spirits are called demons. The Devil rules the demons as his slaves. Jesus defeated Satan once and for ever when He went to the cross, died and was resurrected. But God allows Satan to have a little power even today.

Apocalypse XII : v 7 - 9. ( Angels fighting in heaven.)

Hi starrs0,
Interesting. I don’t know either. Who does he claim satan is? The bible talks around the subject but I cant find the words " satan is an angel." I believe he is though. See Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beaufiful, and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose." Job 1:6 “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord , and Satan also came among them.” The word satan is hebrew for adversary.

Oh, my Heavens! Why spend your time talking like that?

Scripture leaves it to us to use our common sense to conclude that you’ll never see a giraffe in charge of an army of rhinoceroses, or a rabbit in charge of an army of foxes.

So, when Jesus says that He will say, “Out of my sight, you condemned, into that everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels,” Matthew 25:41, He is expecting you to listen to or read His words like a normal human being, and not some kind of obsessive, bug-eyed hair-splitter, and realize that when He refers to “the Devil and his angels,” He is referring to a chief bad angel leading a band of bad angels.
