Saturday mass at 12:10 pm satisfies obligation?

Plus this has nothing to do with any church teachings. it is what I personally feel and hope that people are intelligent enough to seperate that. I am not giving advice I was giving my personal opinion on a discussion board and its amazing how many Catholics give similar attitude of responses in the non Catholic threads so its okay for you guys to advise us not to but the other way around, you can chip in knowing all about us.

I think part of the problem here is that the original poster posted a question.

You replied with your personal feelings.

The original post was not a request for personal thoughts and reflections on the question asked. It was looking for some actual guidance on the issue.

You have to know that as a non-Catholic you can not really provide such answers. When I read your first reply it does come off as condescending. As if you see the OP as someone who is just wanting to do the bare minimum and fulfill his obligations and nothing more. I hope you can see how one can read your reply that way.

I also suggest that you put an actual religion in your profile rather than listing your religion as “I love God”. This way people will know that you are not Catholic and not take your posts as something they are not.

I’m having a bit of an issue with this. My understanding was that so-called “vigil” masses only fulfill your obligation on holy days because holy days begin with the first vesper (the vesper of the “previous” day by the reckoning of a 24-hour day calendar). Thus, they’re not really vigil masses, but masses which take place on that holy day. Regardless, there is a church in my diocese that offers a 12:10 pm mass that it claims satisfies the obligation. How is this possible?

Is the parish in high-crime neighborhood where “after-dark” masses may be less safe to attend?

The rationale behind the ‘vigil’ Masses stems from the ecclesiastical and Jewish calendars where a day begins at sunset. For example, the Sabbath begins at sunset on Fridays. Christmas begins with Christmas Eve, saints feast days begins with the eves.

After Vatican II it began to be allowable to fulfill the Sunday obligation on the eve of Sunday - hence the vigil Mass being held at about the evening on Saturday.

I don’t know about the ‘no earlier than’ 4pm rule. In this part of the world vigil Masses usually begin at 5pm or 6pm.

12:10 Mass on Saturday cannot possibly fulfill the Sunday obligation as it must be a Mass on Saturday evening. I don’t think by any stretch of the imagination you can call lunchtime Saturday evening.

Can. 1248 §1 The obligation of assisting at Mass is satisfied wherever Mass is celebrated in a Catholic rite either on a Holyday itself or on** the evening of the previous day**.

The Bishop could approve earlier massees if there is a special circumstance.

When I first visited this town (Las Vegas), the Cathedral (whichis on the strip) had a 2:30 P.M. Saturday Mass listed as “meets Sunday Observation for tourists only.” At the time, they had Mass on the hour in the Cathedral, and overlapping on the half hour in the hall–generally full to the brim. hawk
