I have a friend that used to be Catholic and now she is a protestant and she is pro gay and pro gay marriage (she is not gay she just supports them) She calls me and the Catholic Church bigoted and full of hate.

I explained to her that the Bible clearly states that being gay is an abomination to God. I also explained to her if a gay person remains celebate or even gets married to someone of the opposite sex they would not be commiting a sin. It’s only a sin if you act on your gay feelings.

She said she agrees with everything but the first part (homosexuality being an abomination to God) and I told her that if she has a problem with that she has a problem with the Bible. She said she does have a problem with the Bible.

My question is how can one say they are a Christian (even a protestant) if they think the Bible is wrong on something that the Bible makes so very clear?

Hi Petertherock!

Why are you asking us? Isn’t that question more appropriate for your friend?

I call it Luther’s dream come true. Its really a new stage in protestantism where more and more people find that there is nothing that stands in their way from believing what they want.

Sadly I agree with you. This is why we have denominations of the Protestants electing openly gay bishops and allowing gay marriages in the churches.

To quote Gene Robinson:

“Just simply to say that it goes against tradition and the teaching of the Church and Scripture does not necessarily make it wrong.”

Beats me how anybody could call himself a Christian, especially a bishop, and believe this, but apparently he does.

I’ve wondered for years how some Christians can ignore Christ’s teaching on divorce and re-marriage. He goes so far as to call it adultery! Yet some Protestant ministers have no qualms about marrying someone to one spouse after another.

I would venture a guess that the acceptance of homosexuality is a natural outgrowth of the denial of other scriptural passages.

Because they (a lot of them) don’t want to adapt to God, but to the world. Then God’s teachings must change, to be modern enough for the world of today.

what exactly is meant by abomination. Surely the bible only means that homosexuality activity is an abomination, not the whole idea of homosexuality, or homosexual people. If this is the case, then it would not only be particular people who have problems with the bibles statement, but also a number of high ranking clergy members in the catholic church.

please explain, thankyou

The way I have always understood it as my original post said, is it is only a sin/abomination if one is actively engageing in homosexual relations.

Sadly all these prots will be standing in line waiting to get into heaven and when they get to the gate, they better be able to answer some questions on why they defied God and did not follow His will. We all try and help them on these forums but they seem to just deny everything we say even if it is fact.

This is my opinion on why protestant denoms. accept gays. It is because they accept everything that society accepts. They change with the times. Where the Catholic Church has had its foundation stay the same for 2000 plus years. They also believe what they want to believe because they don’t want to follow the rules or laws that we Catholics hold dear to our hearts. They know that being a homosexual, only if you act on your feelings, is wrong but they don’t care about the Bible, they only care about themselves. Like I said on another post, I will not use the H word because they can read it in the Bible and if they believe in Bible Scripture then they know what word i’m refering to.

I completely agree. At least with the catholic church you know where you stand. We do not change with the time, but always ensure that our teachings remain important. How can one explain the protestant churches actions without thinking that they are only trying to boost popularity, sadly for them, this is not working.

I think that a lot of the protestant-churchers have a distorted view of what love is (agape). They don’t accept the word sacrifice. In their view sex is for joy (and it is, but not as joy “alone”. The joy of having sex is related to be open to have children).

When they can’t see the value of sacrifice and don’t link the sexual act to be open to have children, they do not understand why same-sex behavior is wrong.

They have a limited frame to understand the faith in full!!

Would that make them believers of *sola joy-ura? :tiphat: *

Simple. People want to make God in their image and likeness and not the other way around. It’s easier that way. (or so they think) --KCT

Peter,

There are Protestants and then there are Protestants. Some of them take the Bible literally, word for word; others pretty much ignore it whenever it doesn’t suit their fancies. So before having a good answer I would need to know what kind of Protestant your friend is.
