A scapular is a part of the habit of an order, such as the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel or the Franciscans or Dominicans, etc. It is two pieces of cloth worn over the shoulders down the front and back.

Some orders orders allow lay people to wear a smaller version of their scapulars as a sign of unity with them in their charisms and prayer life, such as the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also called the “brown scapular” because of its color.

Down through the centuries other scapulars have come from promises made in apparitions approved by the Church. Which is one reason why there are several scapular devotions. The Carmelite scapular is the most popular, however.
