Does anyone have a list of which scapulars carry which indulgences and various other benefits? I’m currently trying to choose a scapular but can’t seem to find what benefits and indulgences each one has.
A list of the daily/lifestyle requirements of each scapular would also be highly helpful.
There was a wonderful book published many years ago in the United States called “Treasure Wrapped in Cloth” by Father Stephen Breen. It was an excellent treatment of each of the various scapulars that I remember after all these decades. I don’t know if anything has come near to such an exhaustive treatise. Father left this world a number of years ago now…a remarkable man.
Assuming you have no access to that book, I suppose the most widely and readily available resource would probably be the article on scapulars in the old Catholic Encyclopedia that is available online. The link is below. As it is a hundred years old, any information in it about indulgences would, of course, be superannuated by the reform of indulgences by Blessed Pope Paul VI.
The article would help you though to track down information about each of the scapulars in other articles in the encyclopedia as well as giving you the names of the Religious who are custodians of the various scapulars and they can help you to obtain one, if you contact them. They are also more commercially available presently than once upon a time, thanks to the Internet. Some are easier to find than others, however.
Faculties for investiture, by the way, are no longer reserved and so your local priest can invest in any of the scapulars…however, certain scapulars, such as the Dominican and Norbertine scapulars, are reserved to the members of their third orders.
The Religious who are custodians of the scapulars would be able to assist you with any enrollment into associated confraternities and what membership in the associated confraternity currently entailed.
