Yes. I’ve worn a scapular for many years now. I never leave home without it. 🙂

Also, indulgences are certainly applicable and available.

The entire body of indulgences was revised in 1967. Now we are up to the fourth edition of the* Enchiridion Indulgentiarum * (1999).

A scapular is a sign. Using it while a member of it’s associated confraternity, which involves prayers for others, brings spiritual benefit to oneself and others.

Many people were somehow taught that Vatican II “got rid” of all kinds of traditional teachings and devotions. Not true, not true at all… scapulars, indulgences, prayers for the souls in purgatory, the rosary, Latin, Gregorian Chant, etc. etc. etc. never went away, and the council in fact encouraged that these things be kept up. Unfortunately, that was drowned out by all kinds of nutty ideas that were spread around in the crazy 60s and 70s.
Bless you for being interested! You can wear the scapular as you see fit, but traditionally it should be worn over your shoulders.

But the Vatican did aborogate all existing indulgences, requiring any that were not included in the new norms to be specifically renewed. The fourth edition of Enchiridion indulgentiarum: normae et concessiones is current and the other three and prior are abrogated. There are some grants given since 1999 that are also current.

All those prayers giving so many days indulgence are no longer is used:Regarding partial indulgences, with the abolishment of the former determination of days and years, a new norm or measurement has been established which takes into consideration the action itself of the faithful Christian who performs a work to which an indulgence is attached.

Since by their acts the faithful can obtain, in addition to the merit which is the principal fruit of the act, a further remission of temporal punishment in proportion to the degree to which the charity of the one performing the act is greater, and in proportion to the degree to which the act itself is performed in a more perfect way, it has been considered fitting that this remission of temporal punishment which the Christian faithful acquire through an action should serve as the measurement for the remission of punishment which the ecclesiastical authority bountifully adds by way of partial indulgence.

Yes, of course. This is all correct. What I meant was that many people think the *very idea *of indulgences, etc. were gotten rid of. The best proof that this isn’t true is, as you noted, that Paul VI promulgated a new code of indulgences after Vatican II. 😃

We frequently talk about scapulars and indulgences around here. You’ve gotten good info on indulgences on this thread. A quick search will turn up many discussions about scapulars and the various types (brown, green, red, etc.). The medals you probably also wore as a school girl are still around also. I wear a St Benedict medal on my scapular cord for example.

I wanted to introduce these sacred things correctly to my 6 year old. They do not teach about this anymore in religion class.

Yes indulgences still exist, and the souls in Purgatory would be very greatful for your prayers. Scapulars are still in use also.
:):)🙂
