Scary Earthquakes

Hello

I’ve felt around two earthquakes, one magnitude 5.4 today.

They are very scary, but here in New Zealand you have to get used to them - I get pretty worked up after I feel earthquakes. A couple of years ago we had one in Wellington, NZ, which happened around midnight - they said that despite our stringent building codes, possibly hundreds could have died had the earthquake happened at noon.

Please pray that I won’t feel any more of these earthquakes - they are very worrying.

Thank you for your prayers. Living in a place where every few weeks you feel an earthquake is just something you get used to - our cathedral has been closed for 18 months for earthquake strengthening.

New Zealand building codes are very stringent because of the risk of earthquakes - the government puts up notices on earthquake-prone buildings and closes them if they aren’t fixed - but I still find them pretty awful.

They really scare me - our Cardinal-Archbishop consecrates the Archdiocese each year to the Blessed Mother - every Archbishop of Wellington has done this to protect the city against earthquakes for the last 165 years - that makes me feel safer.
