I for one am a HUGE scary movie fan! I love the thrill.
But my mom thinks that a lot of the modern movies are Satan-inspired. She believes that he can get to you that way. Do any of you parents or anyone else have the same or similar concept?

🙂 I am quite the scary movie fanatic…they’re probably my favorite type:) And my parents are ok with them too (my dad loves them, but my mom won’t watch the really bad ones with us) However, I agree that some can be a little dark, satanic for my taste, and it is understandable to say that some may give a very evil messege to unsuspecting viewers…that’s where “viewer discretion” comes in. You have to be ready to remember that what you’re watching isn’t real, fiction, a product of Hollywood, and you must have to have the ability to separate fact from fiction, what you believe and what is being advertised. Make sure YOU are aware enough to watch those movies, and they’ll be fine.

I’ve found on many occassions after watching something that, even if it is completely opposite of what I believe, it actually reaffirms my faith. Ironically, I can take what I just saw and use it for evidence for my faith. It helps my remember why I believe what I believe…it’s hard to explain, but maybe someone else get where I’m going.

Ever seen Bless the Child? Total satanic, creepy, evil movie…and it gave me a total spiritual reawakening. The scene where they show the painting of the Temptation in the Desert made me burst out in tears and love for Christ…I’m not sure why it did that to me…but after that movie, I seriously went up to my room crying, and I ended up praying and talking to Christ for like half the night…it was weird, and absolutely amazing because we had a long needed talk.

So yeah, know what you’re watching, make sure YOU can handle it, but they’re ok, I don’t see a problem with them at all:)

My parents are Catholic and they had no problem with a good old fashioned horror film. I think mom used to let me watch the Universal horror movies (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc) just so I would ask her to read me Bible stories afterwards just to get me calmed down again! Worked like a charm, I might add. Especially after seeing Creature From the Black Lagoon !!! I happen to like the Omen trilogy, which could have been a lot better, but Jerry Goldsmith’s music is about the scariest (in the first two films) and most beautiful (the final film, when Christ is victorious) I have ever heard in any horror movie.

I may be prejudiced, because I just 😛 LOVE scary movies!!

Seriously, I think it depends on the movie! I think that most scary ones are just great fun. However, I think that any movie (or other entertainment) that mocks Christian beliefs, is probably to be avoided. (A lot of these are not scary movies at all!! They are just put out by people that are hateful toward Our Lord!)
The other thing I think we need to be cautious about is that some of these movies have a lot of nudity & sexual immorality in them. This really is so obviously put in to appeal to the lowest kind of thinking. (You know you have a bad horror movie, if half the people aren’t dressed!)
So, I would suggest a certain amount of caution, but, in general, I think that most of the time, a scary movie is just a good fun way to spend an evening.

I am often surprised that Christian directors don’t take advantage of some of the overall messages in horror movies to reach audiences. In most horror movies there is a definite evil being and no blurring of good and evil. Smartness and courage does win out. There is an odd sort of morality in these films.I watched Jeepers Creepers one and two recently and there is a message of self sacrifice in both these films. In the first the older sister begs the monster to take her instead of her brother-doesn’t work. In the second a boy wrecks his truck and kills himself in an effort to take out the monster and save his friends. Of course Jeepers Creeper is on the level of Freddy Kruger and a lot of people don’t like those types of movies.
