Division always comes when flesh overrides the Spirit…I’m of Peter, I’m of Paul, I’m of Apollos was from day one…I know the Orthodox is not free of division and splits and add ons…Look how they fight with whatever they gets their hands on over a piece of real estate…Usually division has a root…The question that always wondered me was why the break to Protestantism came from the CC and and it’s singular see and not the Orthodox church with the sees that were always present…I always see prots getting bashed for 40,000 denominations…Do you blame the result or do you blame the root cause…Can anyone enlighten me ?

Part of it is cultural, not theological. As Europe changed politically, various factions tried to assert themselves in power plays. Since the Church held land and sway over the people, control of the religion of an area was important. Theological issues that would have been handled within the Church became causes that rulers lept on. In Northern Europe, for example, the nationalization of the church became as important in the growth of Lutheranism as Luther’s teachings themselves. Most of the faithful just woke up one day and learned that they were now in a new church, some never did really learn it.

Since the Orthodox were already more local in nature, these power plays did not become an issue. Theological problems were handled within the local church.

Add to it the fact that Rome did not always have good information and did not always respond correctly and that the Protestants often had their own agendas, and there you go
