Hey everyone. I need to write a report for a class. I need to utilize a scholarly Old Testament Theology work. All the books I find are evangelical protestant writers. Can anyone recommend any Catholic Old Testament Theological works? 🤷

There are a number of fine Catholic Old Testament scholars.

For an overview of the Old Testament, a standard work in Catholic seminaries and colleges is “Reading the Old Testament: An Introduction” by Fr. Lawrence Boadt, a Paulist priest. Covering both Old and New Testaments is the “New Jerome Biblical Commentary.”

There have been a number of prominent Catholic Old Testament scholars in the past several decades, including Roland Murphy, O.Carm., Joseph Blenkinsopp, Richard Clifford, S.J., Carroll Stuhlmueller, C.P., and many others. Who you would cite for your paper will depend on the part of the Old Testament you are focusing on.

Just because the scholar is not Catholic does not necessarily mean they are wrong or espousing false ideas.

This I already know. I am well read on Protestant writers in OT Theo. Now I am looking for a Catholic perspective.

Depends on the subject.

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary would be the basic starting point, I would think. The Anchor Bible Commentary series also has a lot of Catholic authors.

And how come you can only find evangelical works? There is plenty of Protestant exegesis that isn’t evangelical, not to speak of Jewish scholars like Nathan Sarna.

Gerhard von Rad is one of the classic writers on OT theology.
