I would like to pursue a masters in theology but i am struggling with justifying the additional debt on my family to obtain a degree with limited income potential.

Does anyone know of any scholarship programs that would help pay for a theology degree?

I don’t have an answer for you but would definitely encourage you to continue to discern on this front. If you are already working in the church world, and feel that God has really called you to that work and want to further you prospects then it may be a good investment.

If you are looking for a future career change or for increasing your own knowledge, I would definitely be cautious of doing it. In our area there are 20ish applicants with a masters in theology for every position that requires one. While those aren’t horrible odds, it does mean that about 90% of people who apply for a position in our diocese are turned down or wind up working as secretaries in the church.

Keep praying on it!

The first step in the discerning process is to pray, pray, and pray some more.

Are you looking to get your Masters to become a priest or a professor? Both should be taken with serious fervor but with the former step talk to your local priest often. From there he would give you suggestions as to where to go. The latter step should be done by talking with (whether you’re in high school or college) your academic supervisor and even your school’s career councilor.

Depending on the college/university you choose there should be some scholarships available and I’m sure there are some outside scholarships to help lower the debt. Fill out your FAFSA. That will definitely help you in the long run.

High schools have guidance counselors, and colleges normally have career counselors who should be able to point you in the right direction.
