Scholarships for theology

I would like to pursue a masters in theology but i am struggling with justifying the additional debt on my family to obtain a degree with limited income potential.

Does anyone know of any scholarship programs that would help pay for a theology degree?

It seems to me that the place to start is the school you would like to attend: do they (as a school or in the theology department) have any scholarships for students such as you? The second place to look is the association of theologians in your country: they might offer scholarships to students.

All I can tell you is that a dear friend of mine, got her Masters in Theology with the intention of getting a position at the Chancery, OR being a Spiritual Director.
Neither “notion” pays well. She ended up at a parish as a Youth Minister, part time, and defaulted on her substantial student loans and lost her home. Your mileage may vary.
My theology degree was a huge blessing to me and a great boon to my ministries.
But you’ll never recoup your investment.

If you are doing it to learn about the faith that you love, GREAT.

The Maryvale Institute in the UK have a variety of theology courses on offer. Some of them require you to do a weekend of lectures every semester but I’m not sure if they all do. Get in contact with them.

I know the Irish Dominicans run theology courses on a modular basis for laypeople. They might be more affordable if the Dominicans in the US have similar programmes.

Alternatively, you could get the reading list from a theology course you’re interested in and just read the books.

This is probably what I will do. I’d love to go back to school, just for the fun of learning, but it really doesn’t justify the extra expense.

The Internet is really a wonderful resource when it comes to commentary, discussion groups, etc. if that kind of thing isn’t available locally. Is it the exact same as taking a course? No, and I can understand really wanting that experience (I love it!) But I think it really depends on what you mean to accomplish with the degree.

Well, I’m doing theology as part of my teaching studies. If you like I’d be happy to share the booklists and resources from my modules. It may not get you a degree but you’d certainly be learning Theology. I could give you assignment titles as well if you’re interested.
