PR,

I went to school in Milwaukee.

I married a German and have a lot of German relatives.

I’ve been to a number of weddings where there has been dancing.

Could this be a bad version of the chicken dance?

Well I do believe certain nationalities produce better dancers than others, which is why I get embarrassed lol. My girlfriend is Dominican (great dancers), and I’m an Englishman, with a handful of Irish, a tablespoon of Portuguese, and a few dashes of Armenian. Its like I was made to never dance…

And this? If you do this, you must leave the dance immediately and head straight for a confessional.

(Although, I must say that he looks like he’s having a blast, so, in all sincerity, if that’s what you do look like, I say: go for it. Knock yourself out. :))
Hey, how’d that picture of me get on the internet? 😛

That’s probably about what I look like when I go dancing. At least, that’s what my wife tells me. I think I’m a great dancer. 🙂

In all seriousness, though, there should be no problem going. I know it’s been a few years now since my high school years, but I never saw any “grinding” at any of my high school dances (college parties are a different story, though :p) . Even if times have changed a bit, I cannot imagine such dancing would be so widespread that you would feel out of place by not dancing that way.

School dance is coming up in a month, and I have to buy the tickets this week. I just have a couple of questions.
  1. Is it a sin to go? I already told the girlfriend I’d take her and we have been excited for it.
  2. If its not, what can I tell her about dancing? Theres only one kind of dancing that people do now, and a lot of people on this website say its a mortal sin (even though I have no bad intentions).

School dancing is not a sin.

However, it depends how the motions that you put into your dancing that could be sinful.

Be at peace and go to your dance, but be careful of how you use your actions to make it impure.

May God bless you in your efforts

Five bucks says he’s dancing to “you know you make me wanna SHOUT!” . . . . .he’s at the part that goes :dancing: “a little bit softer no-ow, a little bit softer no-ow . . . .”:dancing:
Judging by the guy in the blue jeans…I still say its a bad chicken dance. Maybe.

Dancing is not considered sinful in the Catholic Church, although so-called liturgical dancing is not permitted unless the Mass is occurring in a culture which uses dance as expression (ours in the US does not.)

About the only dancing that would be considered sinful is something that mimics the sex act–e.g.- full frontal body contact and extreme pelvic gyrations. I don’t think that most high school dance chaperones would let that kind of thing fly. Usually, what happens is some of the girls dance together, a couple of guys dance with the girl they came with (and frequently look like a frog in a blender,) and everyone else just kind of stands around and looks ill at ease or listens to the band.

Even those turquoise tights on that guy aren’t sinful, just tacky and inappropriate for a high school dance. Presumably, you’re not going to be dressing like that!

If she’s a terrific dancer, and you’re not, just pick up the rhythm of the music and move your feet in time to it. Make *her *look good on the dance floor.

Hi and how I remember my dancing days.

First, no it’s not a sin. Even our Lord went to weddings where there was dancing. And too and I imagine more than not there will be chaperons there that will make sure no one does the “funky chicken” or the “robot” wrong. Those dances are clean. Just kidding. I was meaning if there was dirty dancing. Have a great time!

I speak from personal experience when I say they suck! They get worse in high school because then they’re formal! I didn’t even waste my time on my prom! I just went to the after party for lots of pizza! Now that was fun!

St_Hilary:
It is not a sin to go to a dance; however, if you have the initentions of immorally dancing, than, it is a sin.

I am sure you do not have oto follow the crowds.

Go to the dance with the concept that it will not be an immoral dance.

Go for it young David - at least you’ll be able to look back at it and laugh! My high school dance was all of 40 years ago. I went to an all boys school. In 4th year (16yo) the custom was for my school and an all girls school from a neighbouring town to have a united school dance. All I remember was the excitement as the Chaplain and some of the teachers opened the gym hall doors to us boys. Try youtubing “Pamplona Bull run” for an approximation of the result. Oh happy days (or daze - given the illicit ‘hooch’ some of us had downed)
