Sci-Fi Novel Idea

I had a very cool idea about a science fiction novel that had to do with the Vatican and space and all of that good stuff. I’m currently creating the religions for some of the alien species I’ve thought of. Any suggestions of any religion I should draw inspiration from.

Well which religions are you familiar with already?
Are the aliens good? Neutral? Evil? Why?
Lawful? Neutral? Chaotic? Why?

An alien race driven by sacrifice to a dark god is good for a planet-invading bad guy of doom, but doesn’t work if they’re allies. Knowing the context of what you want to use it for is rather important.

I’m familiar with Christianity and Greek Polytheism, but that’s about it. As of now, all of the aliens are neutral toward humans.
