First, typical of the NYT. More money than God? If God is the resource of all things in the universe, then how can a small entity, smaller than a micro-cell, in relation to the universe, like his church in Rome, have more money than God. Yes, yes, I realize that this is a rhetorical cultural aphorism to incite the reader to read on. Anyway, I believe this belongs in “Philosophy” because the premise of this article by Gary Wills, published July 21, 2011, Scientologists, Catholics and More Money Than God, can be reduced to the main philosophical principle and act of Christ when turning the Keys of the Church over to St. Peter. Did not Christ understand the nature of man, even with regards to money? Is anyone suprised when mere mortals, i.e., leaders of the Catholic Church sin? The Church does not sin, some men and women within the Church sin. I love it at the end when Garry Wills states, “Some are surprised that religion is so corruptible.” LOL. I think he means, some are surprised that mortal men and women, even under the auspices of clerics, sin. What a comic that Wills. However, it’s interesting that Rome, after 2,000 years of war, policial corruption, and various other turmoil that could easily have crushed it out of existence still stands. What is that verse in Matthew that it (the church) will never fall until the return of the son of man?
