Hi, Please clear up who to reconcile these verses and how they relate to Islam and Christianity. We Christians are slaves and also sons? I am still trying to understand. Maybe my chosen verses aren’t the best or the verses chosen by Scott Hahn.

I just finished listening to Scott Hahn’s CD (monthly CD from Lighthouse Catholic Media) comparing and contrasting Islam and Christianity.

His main premise seemed to be that we relate to God the Father as a father and we as sons. Muslims relate to God as a master and they as slaves. This has to do with the Abraham-Isaac and the Abraham-Ishmael relationship.

I get what Dr. Hahn is trying to say and I see all the relationships, foreshadowing, et cetera that he highlights. But what about St. Paul? I seem to remember him referring to himself as a slave for Christ and my fuzzy memory doesn’t allow me to recall any saints who’ve also stated that but I believe they have. If anyone could remind me who I might mean, that would be great! I vaguely remember there being some sort of a pious practice that involved a bracelet representing bondage…

I think there are many ways to relate to God as a Christian but I will try not to digress. How might someone reconcile what Hahn said about relating to God and what St. Paul seems to say?

Well, Christ is our Master, and we are in servitude…servants of the Master. But, Christ is a loving Master, who wants us to share his love to us, via HS. … not having us serve in fear.
Like we serve/obey parents, … we can understand our obligations in the Catholic Holy Family model of living. We grow to see Christ both as Father & Elder Brother, …and the HS as our best and most trusted friend. We also the children …depended on our Parent for creation and daily nourishment.
