I sit next to a Jahovah’s Witness at work and need some scriptural proofs for defending the Trinity.

I would suggest that you go online and look up all the bizarre JW teachings and put them on the defensive. They are not even a Christian Church, it is a cult. I just went to see an ex-JW give a talk last Friday night and she assured us that it is in fact a cult. Ask them if they believe that they will go to heaven, the answer is no! They believe only 144,000 people will actually make it to heaven. The JW of today doesnt even believe the same things that their own founder believed back around 1880. I would look up some of their beliefs and then start asking for scriptural proofs for that, they had to come up with their own bible translation that is rejected by every bible scholar (Protestant and Catholic) just to try to twist things around to justify their wacked out doctrines.

Ask your JW what his authority is for what he says. If he say scripture, make him put away his Watchtower and Awake magazines - their true authority.

You can educate yourself quickly by acquiring a book by David Reed called Answering Jehovah’s Witness. There are two versions. One version is set up to answer each objection with the JW teaching followed by what Christianity teaches. The other is in scriptureal order. Both are superb. Reed is not a Catholic, but he will be someday as we all will be - including the JWs.

Another good source is provided by Ken Guidon. I believe his book and tapes are available through Catholic Answers.

God Bless you and go slow.

their are many apologetic resources that cover the trinity. Some right here at the Library portion of Catholic answers. There is a series of apologetic workbooks for sale at the catolog here that specific issues by the JWS and an other book about the trintiy for a few bucks. Go online and you’ll find defenses from Catholic authors for the Trinity. Yet, I suggest before explaining the third person of the Trinity you start with the Divinity of CHrist. Defend that first tell your coworker that it won’t make sense to explain the trinity til you address the nature of Jesus.

the thing is, the JW’s are correct in the sense that the Trinity is not clearly taught in scripture. The word “Trinity” appears no where. The traditional Christian doctrine of the Trinity is more rooted in, well, Tradition - Tradition tying together mysterious passages of scripture and trying to make sense of it all. This is a great argument against Sola Scriptura, if you ever find yourself discussing the issue with a Protestant. But it probably won’t help much with the JWs.

Good point, Jesus is not A god, He is God

Use your authority vs. his authority to discuss, not argue.

You might try just looking at him for 5-10 seconds. When he asks what you are doing, quote Mother Theresa who always first paused and looked for Jesus in everyone. He is there, and you may have a chance to discover Him for both you and your JW co-worker,
