More than 400 biblical experts from 98 countries are expected to attend a Vatican-sponsored conference in September to commemorate the Second Vatican Council’s document on Scripture and revelation.

The Sept. 14-18 encounter in Rome will feature formal presentations and discussions on the theme, “Sacred Scripture in the Life of the Church.” In addition to Catholic experts, representatives of other Christian churches and other religions also have been invited, the Vatican said Sept. 1….
“The purpose of the conference is not retrospective, but will instead aim to trace a “critical panorama” of the current situation, identifying current challenges and problems, the Vatican said. The overall goal is to promote awareness of the importance of the Bible and biblical studies in the modern church.

Participants will include cardinals and bishops, scholars and other experts, as well as members of church organizations that focus on the Bible and biblical studies in their work……”

A note buy the Holy See’s press office informed that the meeting, which is to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ‘Dei Verbum’ Constitution, will be chaired by Cardinal Walter Kasper.

Kasper himself, together with Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, a bible scholar, will be the main speakers. Joseph Ratzinger also worked on the Constitution.

“…According to Cardinal Kasper it was a text that “brought about an increasing awareness of the importance of the Sacred Scriptures”. Among the sponsors of this meeting is the Catholic Bible Federation, an international organisation established by Pope Paul VI. The organisation is made up of 300 member institutions in 127 countries, and has the aim to coordinate the Catholic bible’s preachings in the world.

The 18 presentations and discussion groups will speak of the Bible’s preachings, such as exegesis, catechesis and liturgy, the ecumenical dialogue, the ties with Judaism, the challenge represented by new religious movements and the growing fundamentalist problem, the issue of religious values in a secular context, and finally the theme of peace and justice in a globalised world……”

Hagia, thanks for that information, I want to say I’m going but I think if I called the Vatican I would be told my invitation is in the mail.

But, on the serious side, when I read of conferences such as this I cannot help but to be greatful for the leaders of the Church we have. I want to say this has John Paul II’s influence all over it, which it does, but more important knowing of the brillant Theologian we have in Benedict XVI and Cardinal Kasper (whom I’ve been reading his works since the mid 70’s) I’m truely greatful for being in a (The) Church that has and continues to give us great leaders.
