Can someone show me some scripture about the need for or about Godparents? I am having a talking with a non catholic about this and I need scripture. thanks

Maybe in the days when everyone was Catholic, godparents could possibly have been seen as unnecessary. But in today’s very non-Christian world, I would think that even Christians who don’t believe in infant baptism would believe in assigning godparents to their children from Day One. And any new Christian becoming Christian as an adult would need no justification whatever for finding someone to help him into Christianity and then help him live as a Christian for the rest of his life.
It’s not having godparents that needs justification from scripture.
When infants are solemnly baptized, persons assist at the ceremony to make profession of the faith in the child’s name. This practice comes from antiquity and is witnessed to by Tertullian, St. Basil, St. Augustine, and others. Such persons are designated sponsores, offerentes, susceptores, fidejussores, and patrini. The English term is godfather and godmother, or in Anglo-Saxon, gossip.
If death had not come into the world, we wouldn’t have to make provision for godparents. But it did, and we do.These sponsors, in default of the child’s parents, are obliged to instruct it concerning faith and morals…

Explain to your friend that the practice of having godparents is a practical consideration that arose in the Church to meet the need of having someone in the community commited to lending a hand to the parents in seeing to the spiritual upbringing of their children. As long as it doesn’t contradict Scripture or go against it, it doesn’t HAVE to be explicitly stated in Scripture. If your friend insists that it does, ask her to show you in Scripture where it says so.
