I’m one of the team leaders at RCIA for my church, although this is my first year doing such a thing. Part of our routine every week is discussing that next Sunday’s Gospel reading, and one of the team leaders goes up on stage and talks about it. This Wednesday is my turn and I was wondering if anybody had any observations or important background info that could help me? It all seems pretty straightforward in my eyes, but anyway here it is… Any bit of help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

Jesus said to his disciples:
“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars,
and on earth nations will be in dismay,
perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.
People will die of fright
in anticipation of what is coming upon the world,
for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
And then they will see the Son of Man
coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
But when these signs begin to happen,
stand erect and raise your heads
because your redemption is at hand.

“Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy
from carousing and drunkenness
and the anxieties of daily life,
and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.
For that day will assault everyone
who lives on the face of the earth.
Be vigilant at all times
and pray that you have the strength
to escape the tribulations that are imminent
and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Hi Ex__,

The question might come up about when this is going to happen, and whether it’s happening now and so forth. The simple answer is : Jesus said that he will come like a thief. Nobody knows.

Verbum

Thanks Verbum, and I’ve also had help finding other great resources as well.

As to the question of “if it’s happening now” I tend to think that when the time comes it will actually be very clear to everyone, and not so dependent on speculation.

In any case, I know the important thing is to focus on doing God’s will in the here and now. Then no matter what comes you will not have to worry.

If you can get your hands on a copy of David Currie’s “Rapture: The End Times Myth that Leaves the Bible Behind” before then, do. Mr. Currie has a great chapter on the Olivet Discourse - IMHO, that chapter would make a great stand-alone booklet!

I’ve prepared a Bible study for this Sunday’s Gospel reading, which you will find at my website, linked below.
