Hey all, I was looking for some quick (name removed by moderator)ut.

I went to confession on Tuesday out of need. I am flying somewhere tomorrow, and generally want to go to confession before I fly.

My question is, is it scrupulous of me if I feel like I need to go again? I’ve not committed any mortal sins, and that makes me feel like I’m being scrupulous, which is a tendency I have I’m trying to avoid exacerbating.

What are your thoughts?

You already went to confession. There isn’t a need to go again. Whether it’s scrupulous or not, the key is that we don’t go to confession because we feel we need to, so much as we actually have a reason to go. That reason could be that we are conscious of grave sin, or it could be that it’s time for our monthly confession. But if you went earlier in the week and haven’t committed any serious sins, don’t worry about it.

1452 When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called “perfect” (contrition of charity). Such contrition remits venial sins; …
Sadly, my primary motivator remains fear of Hell rather than love of God. I’m working on it, but genuinely do not believe I am capable of perfect contrition yet.

Thank you Father, this is where I was leaning but still felt like it’d be a good idea to get some (name removed by moderator)ut.

It sounds like scrupulocity, or perhaps you just like that tradition of going to confession right before a flight?

As an “armchair psychologist” (meaning I have no training and simply just spouting off from my own experiences, so take the following as you want)

I’d say that if you’re going to confession to reduce a sense of anxiety, rather than to use it for it’s purpose: cleansing your soul, then it may be classified as scrupulocity.

If you’re going because you like the tradition, thats not a problem, unless you get severely distressed that you couldn’t do this tradition, then that may be a problem.

If you don’t think you’ve committed any mortal sins, there is no need to be going to Confession twice in the same week. Once a week is usually the most frequently that I see anyone go.

If you just want to get rid of your venial sins, go to Mass and receive Holy Communion. That will remove venial sin.

Yeah, it sounds more like you have a fear of flying and going to confession is part of your pre-flight comfort ritual.

I am not terribly afraid of flying, but I do like to go to Mass before starting a journey whenever possible.
I mean, as far as comfort rituals go, confession is far from the worst one. But I personally think in this case it would be purely about a comforting traditional and less about the sacrament, since OP has confessed very recently and isn’t conscious of grave sin.

Actually, I love flying. Part of me wants to quit my job to become a pilot. ✈️

I just feel an urge to go, which I believe is scrupulosity popping in to say hi. I have an issue with scrupulosity, and am really trying not to feed it, which is why I asked. ^^

I don’t get to design anything, so my aesthetic sense isn’t worth much. Very few architects actually get to design anything, most of us just do draftsman work T_T

That part of why I do the VR stuff I do, or coding, or writing… At least then I get to create something.

Oh I know. And 90% of your job is code compliance. The artistry in buildings is all but gone.

My younger brother wants to be an architect. Maybe there’s hope!

I suppose that’s true. I’d better warn him, then. Although, knowing him, he’d likely pursue it anyway.
