Seal of Confession

Hi all,

Was just curious - exactly when does the seal of confession come into effect? Are all one-on-one conversations with a priest protected, or only those that are part of the Sacrament?

Only those within the Sacrament of Confession. And they are not confidential for you, only for the confessor (and intrepreters).
 
My understanding from a legal perspective is that it covers conversations in which the primary motive was seeking forgivenesss in the sacrament.

True, a penitent can break the seal of his/her own confession. However, the priest who heard the confession cannot ever discuss the confession, even with the penitent! Even if the penitent breaks the seal!
 
The seal only applies to the priest in the Confessional.
It does not apply to the penitent.
Private conversation with a priest outside of Confessional has no seal to it.
You may request to keep the conversation confidential, but there is no seal.

I would say outside Confession not outside the Confessional. It is the act, not the place that is important.
