Does it violate the third commandment to search hotel rooms or prices on the internet on Sunday?

*To be clear, I am talking about browsing for a hotel on Sunday, not staying on Sunday.

It is an objective question, something that I don’t know and would like to know. It is that simple.

The reason it sounds scrupulous to me is because why could this possibly violate any commandment? Clearly, there’s nothing inherent in finding lodging that takes away from proper reverence and worship due to God.

It could be perceived as an unnecessary form of trade since it could be done another day. If course, looking is not booking but it is part of the “shopping” I guess. I have more free time Sunday, so it is handy to me. I would just want to be sure.

The commandment doesn’t prohibit trade or shopping… necessary or otherwise.

CCC #2185 or in Brief # 2193
On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

The charity of truth seeks holy leisure- the necessity of charity accepts just work.

AND
2193 “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound . . . to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body” (CIC, can. 1247).

Code of Canon Law #1247
Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.

Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and aVairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.

Thank you, but I can’t assert a clear answer from these extracts.

No it is not a sin. As long as you went to Mass today and it does not interfere with the worship that is due to God, its not a sin. Today (in general every Sunday) is a day of rest for man.

I will agree with Average_Joe. It is not a sin to search for hotel rooms on Sunday. It is also not a sin to STAY at a hotel on a Sunday. The hotel industry is 24/7/365, people need a place to stay when they are away from home.

Does searching the internet for hotel rooms on Sunday prevent you from worshipping God ie attending Mass?

Does searching the internet for hotel rooms on Sunday lessen the joy you feel in celebrating the resurrection of the Lord, in thanksgiving for all His blessings etc.?

Does searching the internet for hotel rooms on Sunday prevent you from taking time out to do something you enjoy, or spend time with family or friends, doing something that is enjoyable and relaxing even just reading a good book?

If your answer to each of the above is no - then searching for hotel rooms on the internet on Sunday is not sinful.
