I am not sure where to post this but I am hoping someone can help me find a particular past CA radio show. I believe it aired a few months ago. In it the guest spoke about some of the political history of the time of the Kings. I recall him answering a caller question of the motives of the folks in the northern tribes who rejected the opportunity to worship at the temple. He explained how there was some sort of political maneuvering due to displeasure with the heavy handed practices of the King at the time. I am sure I don’t have those details exactly correct since my memory on it is fuzzy but it was very interesting and I wanted to revisit the show. Can anyone help me locate the podcast of it?

The issue for the Northern kingdom was that the Temple was in Jerusalem, the capital of the southern kingdom. The fear of the kings of the northern kingdom was that if the peole all went to the Temple in Jerusalem to sacrifice then they would eventually want to return to being ruled by the king of the Southern kingdom and that would be the end of the northern kingdom. So in order to avoid that scenario the Northern kingdom’s king set up his own shrines to God.

Thanks for the explanation. I can’t find the episode myself so this helps a little bit. One thing I seem to also recall from the show was something about other temples, or at least sacrifices to God In other locations, being allowed but that the annual pilgrimage to the main temple in Jerusalem was what was still mandatory. I believe I have something wrong there, which is why I had wanted to revisit the episode.

There were three parts in the condemnation of the northern kingdom. There was the Israelites infidelity to God, for example in setting up the rival temples and also for example going to consult the Baals when they should have been consulting God. There was also the unjust murder for example when Jezebel (acting on behalf of Ahaz) had Naboth killed for his vineyard.
