I have a bit of an odd religious history. I was raised Presbyterian (was baptized and confirmed), then fell into atheism at about the age of 15 or so. I experimented with Buddhism briefly, but then it was back to atheism. Finally, on December 24, 2006 - I felt the presence of God in a way I’ve never felt before. I instantly converted back to Christianity and have been attending non-denominational/Presbyterian churches.

However, I’ve been looking for a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ - particularly since I’ve been in India for the past 4 months on business. I’ve been working on developing an active prayer life and have been reading Scripture every night. However, I’ve found myself feeling not “completely” whole. I’ve been looking seriously at converting to Catholicism - and I’ve been doing a fair amount of research - and have seen some things that have definitely made me feel that it is the right path for me.

I also met up with a coworker’s aunt (who is Catholic) to go visit the poor, aged and destitute. It was an absolutely beautiful experience. We visited these places in Mysore, India (run by the Little Sisters of Mercy) and I felt my entire body/heart just feel the presence/love of Christ - it was amazing. My coworker’s aunt personally blessed, prayed and sang (both in English and in Kannada, the regional language) with people that society had forgotten about - people who can’t walk, people who can’t talk, children with no homes, etc - I was completely inspired by her, the work that she is doing, as well as the Sisters who help run the institutions we visited. One of the more moving moments was when an elderly resident of the nursing home, with cataracts in her eyes, asked me to pray for her - her name is Margaret.

I feel that it was almost a “turning point” for me - obviously, I will continue to study/research as I have been doing. Just felt like sharing my story. Any advice for me?

One thing you might consider would be to pray the Liturgy of the Hours (or a portion of it). Although this is a Catholic thing, it would be easy for anyone familiar with scripture to start doing.

I’d recommend the 1 volume “Christian Prayer” book. And start with morning and evening prayer. There are many resources here at CAF to help you get going if you have difficulty figuring out the process.

I’d also recommend starting RCIA at a Catholic parish. This is a way to check out Catholicism with no pressure involved.

Wonderful information!

I’ll be praying for Margaret too!

Thanks for the advice! I found a place online - Universalis - that has the Liturgy Of The Hours in a variety of formats. I’ll definitely check that out.

Also, realized that the order that ran the homes for the poor and elderly was the Little Sisters Of The Poor - almost had it! 😛

I am not certain of where anymore, a Saleisian priest we know was there for several years. Wherever it is, they have ‘gigantic’ Masses. It might be worth your time finding out about them and going to one. Maybe there is some info on here
