ZAROVE:
Oh, and I was invited.
Greenspun forum?

Never heard of it.

Hey Zarove.

DavidB, AnonMark, promethius (paul h), ZAROVE, Emerald,

Welcome! Great to see you all here. I really miss our old forum :(. AnonMark, which Mark are you?

God bless,
Lily628

Thanks Lily.

Hey, I’ve got a question that probably has a really simple answer. I’ve never undestood something:

How could the greenspun forum server have died when the greenspun forum server has a message up on it… telling us that it died?’

I never understood that. Now if they’d said they had closed down the forums because the server couldn’t handle the traffic anymore, that I’d understand. Just seems odd to say the server up and died.

Emerald, my guess is that there was more than one server. Perhaps one was to handle traffic and such, and the other, to simply view postings. I don’t know much about how this stuff works. Maybe it was because they couldn’t handle the large amount of traffic anymore, like you said. However, something is left, that’s for sure, since the content is still viewable.

If you go to the LUSENET page (greenspun.com/bboard/), click “list all forums in the system”, which brings you here (greenspun.com/bboard/all-forums.tcl). You can still read the archives, if you’re willing to dig through it all.

And if worse comes to worse and the archives disappear, there’s always the Wayback Machine: web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.greenspun.com

emerald, i think thats what was implied when they said the server has keeled over.

what happened is that the server is too old and too expensive to continue upgrading in order to continue to handle the amount of traffic and posts which were constantly entering into it. as such, a simple message is a lot easier for a server to handle than a posting system for a forum, which is why you can get a message telling you you can’t post… though it doesnt change the fact that the code which allowed you to post before has now been disabled. i dont see any reason for the old site to go away, but it happens. all sites die eventually.

Greetings, ex-Greenspunners. I really miss you all (yes seriously) and our old forum. I hope we can have some equally stimulating discussions here.

You know me as “Peter K” or “Steve” (55555).

See you in cyberspace.

It’s been a while since the new Catholic forum got up and running. Things have changed a lot over there, check it out

Hi Fellow Greenspunners,

The board is back up (again), but is in serious need of help. It went through a cyber attack, has recovered to some extent, but currently everybody seems to be at war with one another.

If enough good posters people would return we may be able to take back the forum and end the insanity that’s going on now.
Some regulars are there but a few I’m less familiar with seem to turn every thread into a battle. I think this problem could be overcome with a little help from our friends.

Overpower the troublemakers. Get things back on course by ignoring the bickering.
