How many here work second or third shift? What type of experience does anyone have with a ministry for these workers?

I currently work second shift. It has advantages and disadvantages. The extra ten percent on my salary is what helps us send our kids to Catholic schools and one in college. Working this shift keeps me from rotating shifts also.

Has anyone ever seen a ministry for second and third shift workers? Most parishes will have something during the day but that is typically for the retired, elderly or stay at home moms. I am specifically looking for a ministry designed for working age men and women during the day.
 
I currently work to a rotating three-shift system - one week 22:00 - 06:00, following week 14:00 - 22:00, then third week 06:00 - 14:00, then back to night shift the following week. Each shift is worked for 5 consecutive days Monday to Friday, the last night shift finishing 6am Saturday morning.

I’ve never known any ministry be taken to shift workers. Although most parishes in my area have morning mass sometime between 8am and 11 am, this seems to be mainly aimed at those who are free during the day and would only be of use to people on afternoon shift. People of morning shift would be working and those on nights would still be sleeping. The only other ministries/parish activities I’ve ever know have been in the early evening, mainly aimed at people who are working during the day. Strictly you could say these are available to night workers as well, but that would depend on the hours they’re working.
 
Why not ask the Pastor at your parish for information about this? If people do not “ask”, the need will not be known. Then the Pastor is able to take a survey or something like that at the parish and . . . maybe you’d get “something”? Parish Pastors are to take care of their “flock”.

If that does not work, call the diocese’s Office of Worship and find out through them. If you look at the diocese’s website, you may find other departments/offices that could give you information.

Two ministries come to mind for working people available during the day.

Prison Ministries
Visiting the sick/homebound

I’m sure your priest would be thrilled to work with you in identifying a ministry.

That’s interesting that you would mention prison ministries. You are not the first person to mention that to me. Maybe God is trying to tell me something?

I was meaning more along the line of fellowship/study for people who work night shifts to get together.
 
I also struggle with this question because I work second shift, and that means a lot of time alone at night with not much to do, and a lot of time in the mornings with not much to do. Most of the opportunities I see take place while I’m a work.

I see you are a convert. Do you think other denominations do a better job at putting together a ministry? Or about the same?

Personally, I haven’t participated (yet) in Catholic ministries… and I emphasize “yet” because I’m actually in the process of getting involved in one (I just got approved for the days off that I would need from my work in order to participate in it)…

But from my general observations, Protestants, especially in the United States, seem much more “on fire” for God and ministry than Catholics, who seem more inclined to simply do the routine of leaving their faith at the door after Sunday Mass.

But… I am really really hoping to change that perception of mine in the coming months!
