Does anyone know what is involved or how to go about starting a new Secular Institute?

I don’t really know about starting a new one, but I do know that mine, which is one of the newer Secular Institutes, started as a Pious Association.

From what I understand, it started as a Pious Association with the Bishop’s permission. After some years of the group staying intact and stable, and drawing others to it, it became a Secular Institute of Diocesan right in 1980. I believe for that to happen, the Constitution of the Institute must have been written, submitted, and approved by the Bishop.

Nineteen years later, our Institute was elevated to pontifical right.

In writing a Constitution, I believe it would be very helpful to have the assistance of someone familiar with Canon Law. If would also be a good idea to schedule an appointment with the Vocation Director of your Diocese. I think that’s where you could be sure to get your questions answered, answered properly, and if needed, be directed to someone else, such as a Canon Law expert.

If you have other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask or PM me. Also, I’m curious as to the charism of the Institute you’re seeking to form. (That’s just a curiosity question on my part; feel no need to answer if you don’t wish to.)

Good luck. 👍
