Secular Music. What about it?

Hello! I just want to know about Protestant youth trying no to sing and/or listen to secular music, (the ones that “do not glorify the Lord and do not mention Him in its lyrics”). Examples of these are rock, pop, love songs, and others that aren’t really Christian in genre.

Some of them burn (literally) their CDs once they get their “baptism in the Spirit” and “accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour.”

Also, some Catholic Charismatic Communities are making this as a norm for their youth in order to minimize the effects of obscene and vulgar lyrics of the songs.

How does the Church view this? Any enlightenment? Thanks in advance…

The catholic view would be that there is nothing inherently wrong with secular music, but discernment is required to avoid music which promotes or condones sinful activity.

Discernment? How about…just about all of it. Heh heh. Seriously I have trouble finding anything on the regular radio stations to listen to anymore. Just when you’re starting to think a song sounds pretty good it goes on to say something like “I’m not worried bout the ring you wear, cause as long as no one knows than nobody can care.”

And then you start to think well maybe it’s ok if I listen to it and just ignore that one line…but that doesn’t really work for me. It makes me kinda sick after a while.

Precisely. Just because something is not explicitly glorifying God does not make it morally wrong. There is a middle ground.

On the other hand, there is indeed a lot of explicitly sinful stuff out there.

I know some people who don’t think that lyrics affect them. They listen to the most hideous stuff you’ve ever heard and claim it’s ok cause they like the music.

Two of my best friends lwould isten to rap where they sing about gang rapes and murders. I was offended just sitting there but she claimed she “didn’t pay attention” to the lyrics!
