What are your views (if any) on the employment of religious imagery/allusions in music which is otherwise secular?

Personally, I view it through a different lens than what I would if discussing a topic directly focused on religion, such as on this website, by judging it on its artistry and what it adds to the song’s meaning because its aim is not to evangelise nor discuss the inner-workings of a religion.

Just curious to hear some people’s opinions on this
 
It depends on the song. I was really enjoying the original version of “Spirit in the Sky” this morning. I understand it was written by a Jewish guy who wanted to write a song about God, and threw a Jesus reference in because he knew it would sell. Great song.

On the other hand, “Take Me to Church” makes me want to upchuck. It seems to be written for a certain segment of the population who fetishize religious imagery. See also Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”. I am not in that category at all.
