Hi. I’ve been asked to post this question here from the apologetics section. (I had initially asked it there, because the question was relevant to me as a non-Catholic as an apologetic matter to understand the Catholic response to this sort of argument, but I of course defer to the rules of the fora.)

I was hoping someone might help me with something about sedevacantism. I’m thinking at the moment of Gerry Matatics, who has adopted this view. I’m reproducing his nutshell sketch of his arguments below from his site. What puzzles me is why his arguments aren’t susceptible to the argument you hear all the time from Catholic apologists that the individual Christian lacks the “authority” to make these sorts of theological judgments on his own (and hence that each minor premise of his syllogisms cannot be supported). What confuses me is that this just can’t be the whole answer to Matatics, because he is extremely well versed on Catholic doctrine, and does not make elementary mistakes about it. (The man was a professional apologist with the primary Catholic apologetical organization, for crying out loud.) So I guess my question is why aren’t Matatics’s arguments below susceptible to that simple-minded argument?

Here are his syllogisms:

The case for “sedevacantism” can be succinctly stated in three separate syllogistic arguments. Any one of these three arguments is sufficient in itself to demonstrate that Benedict XVI cannot possibly be pope and is as likely a candidate as we’ll perhaps ever see for the prophecy of the “German antipope” of the last days who will lead many astray (see abovementioned anthologies of Catholic prophecies). But the combination of all three composes quite a formidable case. The syllogisms are as follows:

Syllogism #1: No true bishop, no true pope
  1. Major premise: A man who is not a validly ordained bishop cannot function as the bishop of Rome, i.e., as the pope. [Note: a non-bishop – even a layman – can be, and sometimes has been, elected to the papacy, but in every case he had to receive the necessary ordination(s) to ascend, however quickly, up through the required ranks of the clergy before he began to reign as pope.]
  2. Minor premise: But Joseph Ratzinger is not a validly ordained bishop, having received (in May 1977) the demonstrably invalid episcopal ordination rite promulgated in June 1968 by antipope Paul VI. (For a devastating demonstration of the fact that the new rite is invalid, read the brilliant 12-page article by Fr. Anthony Cekada, or at least the less technical two-page summary.
  3. Conclusion: Therefore Joseph Ratzinger cannot be a true pope.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Syllogism #2: No true orthodoxy, no true pope
  1. Major premise: A manifest heretic cannot be a true pope.
[See Canon 188.4 of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, Paul IV’s 1559 Cum Ex Apostolatus Officio (the English translation of which is posted on this website in the “Library of Key Documents” section), the unanimous consent of the Fathers and doctors of the Church, as documented in articles by Fr. Cekada on sedevacantism on his website, http://www.traditionalmass.org/, as well as articles on strobertbellarmine.net/.)
  1. Minor premise: But Joseph Ratzinger is a manifest heretic, as can be amply demonstrated from his numerous writings and addresses both before and since his “papal” election. (See articles on Ratzinger on traditionalmass.org/, novusordowatch.org/, or mostholyfamilymonastery.com/.)
  2. Conclusion: Therefore Joseph Ratzinger cannot be a true pope.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Syllogism #3: No true Church, no true pope
  1. Major premise: A head of a non-Catholic church cannot simultaneously be the head of the Catholic Church, i.e., the pope.
  2. Minor premise: But Joseph Ratzinger is the head of a non-Catholic Church, namely the Vatican II or postconciliar Church, the non-Catholic nature of whose doctrines, sacraments and worship, and laws can be readily demonstrated by comparing them to the perennial doctrines, sacraments and worship, and laws of the Catholic Church down through the ages. (See articles on above-mentioned websites.)
  3. Conclusion: Therefore Joseph Ratzinger cannot be the head of the Catholic Church, i.e., the pope.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

An astute observer might notice that the order in which I have presented these syllogisms, moving from the simpler to the more challenging: each of the above three syllogisms demands less material to be surveyed and studied, less of a mental effort, and less of a radical conclusion than the syllogism that follows it.

What’s lacking to such opinions is the authority to form/disseminate them.

Simple. Your syllogisms are based on premises which have no basis in fact. Exercising a syllogism based on untrue premises proves nothing at all – except perhaps the shortcomings of the person presenting the syllogism. Garbage in, garbage out – it’s that simple.

Thanks to you both for your responses. Spiller, to be clear, these are not my syllogisms, but those of Gerry Matatics. I just find it very difficult to believe that Matatics simply ignored so simple an answer. Say what you will about him, but he certainly knows his Catholic doctirnes, right?

Anyway, best regards.

Oh, Catharina – I just saw your link, and apologize for unintentionally violating that rule. A bit frustrating since this seems like a natural place for me to look for information about this issue, but it sounds like there’s a hornet’s nest here over something or other of which I was not aware.

I apologize again for violating this rule.

Regards,

CThomas

Forgive my simple minded nature…

But Jesus said to Peter in Matt 16:18 “I give you the keys to the kingdom, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” meaning the church.

If the church as been led astray then wouldn’t the gates of hell have prevailed against the church?

If so doesn’t that make God a lier?

God cannot lie,

hell cannot have prevailed against the church

Benedict XVI is the real Pope

At least thats how I see it.

again, forgive my simple nature.

I don’t know much about Matatics – except that he is highly controversial.

The syllogism is a form of deduction. Many people don’t seem to have much exposure to philosophy (many Protestants outright disdain its study.) That fact and a big unknown word (syllogism) might well cause many to focus on the mechanics of the argument alone and not on the premises it’s based upon.

They don’t question the premises, the argument itself confuses them and they then blindly accept the proposition/conclusion.

I’m not sure what you mean by “Catholics doctrines” (it rather smacks of a slur), but based on what you presented, if Matatics wrote it, it’s fairly clear he knows little about the Catholic Church.

Spiller, in conformity with the rules, I will limit my response to two points that have nothing to do with the issue of sedevacantism. First, I just wanted to note that I’ve known a lot of Protestants in my day, and I’ve never met a single one who in any way disdained the study of philosophy. Perhaps I just hit a remarkably lucky sample.

Second, I wanted to reassure you that I in no way meant to use the phrase “Catholic doctrines” as any sort of “slur.” I’m not sure how you read it that way, but I apologize if you read that in any sort of derogatory light.

Best regards,

CThomas

Here are his syllogisms:

**Syllogize this:

Sedevacantism is NOT traditional, period.**

Excellent post!

I’ll add:
by its very nature, sedevacantism is a stance AGAINST the Church.

I haven’t been to Matatics’ site in a long time, but judging by his home page his loyalty to sedavacantism pales in comparison to his loyalty asking for donations from unsuspecting Catholics.

the are two possibilities. Matatics knows he is making implied assumptions in his syllogisms or he does not. In one case he is a ignorant and in the second he is dishonest.

In each syllogism, the minor premise is not proven and only begs the question. No one would believe the minor premise unless they were already sedevacantist.

For the foreseeable future, sedevacantism will not be discussed in the Traditional Catholicism forum. And since sedevacantism was only allowed to be discussed in the Traditional Catholicism forum, it will also not be discussed on any of the CAF forums for the foreseeable future.

We regret the necessity of this ban, but the moderators and administrators just do not have the time and resources to arbitrate the sedevacantist threads at this time. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. God bless.
