Seeking info on churches in Lawrence, Kansas

I’m going to be in Lawrence, Kansas this weekend, to see my favorite band (Shooting Star) get inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

Can anyone give me the lowdown on the Catholic churches in Lawrence? I see three when I google. I’m looking to find the one with the most reverent/orthodox setting (traditional music, traditional architecture, following the Mass rules, etc).

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Also, if there are any interesting Catholic sites in the area, I’d check ‘em out.

I’m looking for more of the on-the-ground local knowledge from people in the area.

I’ve already scouted all of the churches’ websites and gotten mass times and whatnot. I’m looking for the kind of expert knowledge that only locals know, like the answers given in this thread:

There are three churches in Lawrence. The old church downtown (St John Evangelist) is pretty on the outside, not so much on the inside since the 1992 wreckovations. (my opinion). The parish is pastored by Franciscans.

The brand new church on the West side (Corpus Christi) is pretty, if unspectacular-- very much in the style of a big suburban parish; it’s only a few years old. If I still lived in Lawrence, this would probably be my everyday parish because it’s nice like that.

But in my opinion, the best “Mass” is at the Student chapel (St. Lawrence Center). st-lawrence.org/ Good music, solid orthodoxy, engaging students. The chapel isn’t some old church or anything, but it’s nice.

Lawrence is a nice town. Enjoy.
 
Right now, St. Lawrence Center seems to be the winner, so that’s my plan!

Any other opinions greatly appreciated 🙂
 
Sorry I didn’t read this before today, but you have gotten good advice to go to the Newman center, St. Lawrence center, on campus. Excellent program for the students there as well.

BTW, talk about KU Jaykawks in your face everywhere you go 😛 I didn’t realize this was such a college town until we got here.
 
Thanks to those who replied! My initial thought was to avoid the college parish. I was surprised how orthodox it was! Thanks for directing me there 😃
 
Glad that you were impressed with the St. Lawrence Center at KU. They have a website which should tell you about the impressive student program they have there. - classes in philosophy and theology. st-lawrence.org/.

Current students tell me that the lines for confession are long. That’s encouraging!

The history of conversions from KU is interesting. In the 70’s (I think) there were many conversions of students, some of whom entered a Benedictine house in France which has given the Tulsa OK area a foundation called “Clear Creek” which has been written about here.

In addition to the Benedictines, KU has given us 2 bishops and several priests. All Jayhawks.

And, too, last year’s national NCAA champions!
