Hello. I’m new to the forums. I’ve done a quick analysis of the posts of the various topic headings and hope this is the appropriate location for this question. If not, please let me know where to repost.

Over the last couple of years, our parish has hosted several programs for our parishioners as a means of renewal. It started with Alpha (Gumbel) and followed that with a “Beta” program (D’Ambrosio). While I wasn’t impressed with Alpha, most of the other participants were. I thought the Beta program was much better (being actually Catholic), but some people felt Mr. D’Ambrosio was not quite as dynamic as Mr. Gumbel. Anyway, both programs did have the effect of bringing together parishioners for fellowship and dialog which is a good thing, as long as they are not misled by some of the teachings of the former program.

Going forward, we are looking at providing additional programs for continued faith formation. While I have suggested DVD programs from the likes of the Hahn’s, Fr. Corapi and Steve Ray (Footprints series), others have suggested a program by a theologian by the name of Thomas Groome. I have been trying to find out some information about him online, but haven’t found much. What I have found is not encouraging. Thus I was wondering if anyone on this forum has any information I could bring to our formation committee to help influence our decision one way or the other.

I would also be very interested in learning of any video programs you might have found successful in your respective parishes.

Thank you all for any information you can provide.

God Bless.

Avoid him and his books and programs. They are a last gasp from the “New” Catechesis of the 80 and 90’s! I have heard him in person and found many of the things he proposes at odds with the Church.

I believe Thomas Groome is an ex-priest now teaching at Boston College, I have several issues with some of the comments in his books on the Catholic Faith namely his assertion that the Church murdered thousands if not millions of women the Church had determined were witches, that Anglican orders are vaild and I think (I may be wrong as it was 5-6 years ago I read his books) that women should be ordained as priests. I know he was disappointed when Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope

**What Makes Us Catholic: Eight Gifts for Life **

Here is the book I read. I encourage you to check out the reader comments at amazon.com

I get the same sense as you both. The challenge is gathering sufficient information to hopefully convince others who currently think his ideas are just fine. Unfortunately, when even some of our Bishops seem to endorse his work, its hard for a simple layman to raise any meaningful objections. But ours is not to predict the outcome, but to keep fighting the good fight…
