Hi all

I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for the past several months. I am taking medication and trying to keep busy in order to keep my mind off my troubles, but every day is still a struggle for me.

Could you please suggest some specific prayers that I could say that would be helpful for someone in my situation?

Thank You

When I was depressed, I asked for St. Dymphna’s (sp?) intercession. She won’t let you down…

Hi all

Have u tried chocolate? And no, i am not being facetious or making light of your problem. Chocolate and coffee can help a LOT w/ depression. I ought to know. I haven’t had either today and i am beginning to feel it. 😃 Just don’t drink coffee on an empty stomach  . Plus, i eat chocolate mixed w/ honey or other natural sugar, not white sugar… (that makes any problem worse).

Also, is your depression physical or situational &/or chronic or what?
I also suffer from this problem @ times. I usually accept it as a cross i must carry (& learn & grow from…). I don’t want 2 take meds… never know what all is in that stuff…:whacky: but i don’t necessarily recommend you stop w/o advise from your dr…
What helps me is being alone with God & nature, & being alone w/ Christ @ the Blessed Sacrament, praying the rosary (when in a state of grace… If not, it can be kind of… well, a necessary evil, shall we say…). Anyway, sometimes things bother us and we don’t even know what it is… That’s why i like to be totally alone with God & and his Son… so They can show me things i don’t easily “see”…
I’m not a psych dr. but i believe depression comes from one thing: sin… whether mine or other’s, usually both. The other day, i was feeling pretty good about my relationship w/ the Lord. But then something got shown to me, that there was this idolatry in the depths of my soul, and i had not seen the extent of it until… well, until i got quiet…
God bless…

Here is the St Dymphna prayer that I copy and paste every so often:

Lord Jesus Christ, You have willed that St. Dymphna should be invoked by thousands of clients as the patroness of nervous and mental disease and have brought it about that her interest in these patients should be an inspiration to and an ideal of charity throughout the world. Grant that, through the prayers of this youthful martyr of purity, those who suffer from nervous and mental illness everywhere on earth may be helped and consoled. I recommend to You in particular (here mention the names of those you wish to pray for, like NYGAL73!!).
Be pleased to hear the prayers of St. Dymphna and of Your Blessed Mother. Give those whom I recommend the patience to bear with their affliction and resignation to do Your divine will. Give them the consolation they need and especially the cure they so much desire, if it be Your will. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

This prayer is especially beautiful to me because it’s scope and language is so universal, and puts our own petitions into the context of the many who need help. My 18 year old son was between psychiatric hospitalizations when my wife found this prayer on a card with a lovely image of St Dymphna. Later I realized he was using it with all his heart and it opened a floodgate in me for this Saint, who I have felt very close to since. She certainly contends as a symbol of hope for the Modern Age. Leonard Cohen wrote: “there is a crack in everything… that’s how the light gets in.”

The rosary. It is wonderful, because you have your heart & mind off your problems, & on Jesus & Mary. When I can’t get to sleep, I start praying the rosary, and the next thing I know, it is morning.

There is something very peaceful about praying the same words over, while resting yourself in your Mother’s arms.

Dear Nygal,

Please do not take this advice seriously without seeing a doctor! Caffeine is in both coffee and chocolate, and I don’t see how either can keep you calm. I would be climbing walls, and cannot drink caffeine - period. Medically, I cannot use chocolate either, since I get severe migraines due to allergies to it. We have to use caution and not try every remedy that others suggest here.

no home remedies but home prayer suggestions, which is what OP asks for.
Morning Offering, say at as if you mean it, or if you wish you could mean it if you were able to make the intention. Just read it out loud even if you don’t feel you are praying it from the heart, and actively speak the intention to offer up your sufferings.

O Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary
I offer you my prayers
works
joys
sufferings
offerings
and sacrifices
of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart,
the salvation of souls,
in reparation for sin,
for the reunion of all Christians,
and for all those who have asked for my prayers.
I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and all apostles of prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.

just read it even when you can’t “pray it”.

I had a moment of anxiety last week, and these words of Jesus came to my mind and helped me to see that I was thinking negatively.
Which of you by being anxious about it can add to his stature a single cubit?

There must be a lot of devotionals in our bookstores that can lift you into faith and trust. Usually on each page there is a psalm or scripture that inspires both, and it will help you refocus and place yourself in God’s care after you meditate and pray on it.

Meanwhile, search the psalms and find some that speak to your heart. This is always comforting to me llerrah.com/dreams.htm
