Hi all-

I’ve agreed to present a workshop for catechists on Scripture. That’s as specific as the request is - my DREs have faith in me, I guess. The workshop day is designed as “teacher training” so I’m thinking I want to focus on teaching from Scripture/using Scripture in the religious ed class. And I presume that most of the volunteers have a typical Catholic’s background in Scripture. (Which means they don’t know how much they actually know, and they don’t know how to find what they remember . . ) And - I have 45 minutes, which is to include both my presentation and some Q&A time.

So - What would you think are the most important points I should try not to leave out?

Oh - I will be producing a handout which will, I hope, become a resource for finding things later. . .

I would suggest that you also associate the readings at Mass the Homily and the Lectionary with the “Bible”.

If you know the date you will be doing the talk - look ahead to what that Sunday Gospel will be. Order the Ignatius Study Bible for that book of the Gospel (they are individual, one or two books of the Bible in each booklet). They contain solid, orthodox footnotes as well as Q and A.

I use a legal size hand out
on the first side (one paragraph each topic):
quotes from DV on why Catholics should read and pray scripture
what is the OT
what is the NT
4 senses of scripture

on the other side:
bible timeline, which puts the books of the bible in order in their context of salvation history

lectionary cycle

(those who are savvy of course have this on a power point I am still in the “overhead” era)

2nd handout:

a lectionary-based resource to use with the age group they teach, these are downloadable as samples from companies that publish them, we use Celebrating the Gospels because it is one side of the page, is reproducible, covers the full cycles + holy days, and is easy for the catechist to adapt to any class style.
For adults, on the other side, I copy a similar resource for adults from any “faith-sharing” resource.

My workshop is 1.5 hours and is presented to catechists as well as in a parent meeting, because I want the parents to know what to do with the resource we send home weekly for families.

for your purposes, cover the high spots in a half-hour, make them do bible-look ups of key verses that you choose for your audience – they can break into groups for this, and do a 5-minute sharing in their group. The purpose of this is to demonstrate that it is not enough to read scripture it has to be chewed and digested, and thought about.

I have seen Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins do their summary of Salvation History in 45 minutes, talking a mile a minute like, the the old FedEx commercial, hysterical.

One handout I would recommend is a list of important scriptural passages associated with various topics such as: the Eucharist, Plan of Salvation, biblical basis for the sacraments, etc. These lists are available in most apologetics books.

45 minutes is ridiculous.
I know - but it is what I have. I’m planning on a handout with pointers to lots of resources! Also will give them my email! Our parish also has an “ask Father” section on the website. So the most I can hope for in this workshop is to give them encouragement, I think, and some really basic information.

Good suggestions, above, and along the lines of what I had in mind. Thanks, all!

Wanted to report back that our first-ever teacher’s workshop day for catechists went well, and that my bit on using Scripture in the classroom was well-received. Thanks to all for the suggestions!

There were also several people who were excited to learn that we are about to launch an adult Bible class, so that was encouraging, too.

i think what’s important is teaching that there is only ONE Church…

Catholicism is not another denomination…

I would focus on things that distinguish Catholicism from Protestantism…

The Eucharist / Real Presence / stand on birth control / stand on divorce / abortion

and history of the Church… definitely

(I may have missed something: is this an ongoing class or a one-time thing?)
