self mortification

I am not uncertain about either.

My point remains.

**The point I wish to make is for those that are uncertain about the difference between penance and self mortification. There are those that believe if the practice of self mortification will lead them to holiness…however the first step is simple penance.

Self-mortification is left to those who have been growing in holiness for a while and under the direction of one who knows…a spiritual director.

I stay with my original statment if one wishes to practice self mortification - one needs to be under the obedience** of a spritual director.

Mortification is for all…

For the practice of mortification one does NOT need to be under obedience to a spiritual director.

(though a spiritual director…which may or may not involve voluntary “obedience” is certainly a good way to go in the spiritual life…and can be another way even of mortification)

There are various kinds of course of mortification…and not all will suit all. But some form mortification is for all …spiritual progress involves mortification.

For *certain forms *of mortification…yes one ought to have advice (etc) from a Spiritual Director or Regular Confessor …

But mortification is simply part of the Christian life.
