I am trying to sell my house and my sister suggested burying a statue of St Joseph by the “For Sale” sign. She says she has heard this, along with prayers of intercession, works. Anyone else hear of this? Your prayers for a quick sell are appreciated.

Thank you and God Bless.

I think that this is pure superstition, but then I’m new here. :o

I have heard a defense of this practice but frankly, the way most people do it (statue upside-down?) is to my reckoning flat-out superstitious. If St. Joseph has a particular interest in real estate, then just pray for his intercession that you will successfully transact your sale.

But then, I get 3 or 4 e-circulars every week from active Catholics (one of them our Parish Council President :bigyikes: ) that promise financial gain if we say a prayer, make a wish, and pass the message on . . . One trembles to think that such juvenile “spirituality” survives among people in responsible positions in the parish.

My family’s house sold very soon after we buried the statue in the front yard. In fact, we didn’t even have time to dig it back up before they closed on the house.
My sister’s boyfriend’s family has sold all of their houses in a matter of days or weeks, and that’s what they do. He gave my parents the statue to bury.

However, I don’t think the act of burying the statue is really what matters- it is the trust you put in St. Joseph to intercede for you on this earthly yet important life event.

our trailer has been on the market for nearly 2 years, fortunately rented, not empty. I got a small St Joseph statue in the mail from some mission organization, and took it over there on a whim, placed in on a window sill and prayed to him to find us a buyer. New renters want to lease-to-own, and if they like the park and the Valley, will buy at the end of the season, as they say ours is the nicest home for sale in the park. Thank you, St. Joseph.

I think this does boarder on superstition, but I think if you actually pray for intercession it isn’t. I’m sure many just bury St. Joseph and “hope.” for a house sale. BTW, my house has been on the market for a month with not a nibble. My DH is “commuting” to another state and missing the kids is just killing him. Thinking of praying really hard…AND ordering the statue!

My mom swears by this St. Joseph tradition. I tried it, buried a statue, said the prayers and it took us a year to sell our house and we lost $15,000 on a three year old home in perfect condition. That had no affect on my love for St. Joseph:) It actually helped me develop a devotion to him, but it didn’t help me sell my house.

The prayer is beautiful and there is no harm in it, but God has a reason for everything. For some reason we must have needed to lose money. be more humble, and make owning a home and material things less important to us. Maybe God wanted us to not worry so much about material wealth and possessions and to know that, even if we lost *everything *we had financially we could depend upon Him.

I was told of this custom by a priest in TX. We were trying to sell our house in a very down market; houses on our street had been for sale for eighteen months. I buried the statue, and prayed for our family and for a new family to buy our house Two weeks later we sold the house.
Sixteen years later St. Joseph interceded for us once again; we sold our house in days by just going door-to-door to the neighbors.
Both houses were sold FSBO, and both because of needing to move to keep our family together.

Thank you, St. Joseph for helping our family.

Asking saints for their intercession is Catholic Christianity, and there is nothing wrong with it.

Burying statues, on the other hand, is pure superstition, and akin to paganistic practices like burying a lock of hair with an egg in a leather bag placed under a rock, so that as the rock sinks and crushes the egg, the person whose hair is in the bag with the egg will lose his toothache. Absolute nonsense.

My son in law and daughter had their house up for sale and I bought the St. Joseph statue and we buried the statue and then our Priest stated that it was borderline superstition and to be very careful (I did not ask him - so somehow I felt the Holy Spirit must be involved here). But in less than two weeks the house had an offer. My daughter loves St. Joseph and He is the patron saint of my son in law. I told my daughter what our Priest said and she did not seem concerned. Well, I have been looking for a house to buy for 7 years, nothing ever panned out. My daughter told me, “I have buried the St. Joseph statue for you”-and I put an offer on a house within 2 weeks and will close this month, more than a miracle for me. I still say it is the prayers and activity more than the actual act putting the statue in the ground.

CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH 2110 Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition. Our Priest is wise. He also likened “Hanging the Rosary for good weather” stating it would be better to say the rosary for good weather.

Just wondering…Does the statue have to be buried? Can we just hide him in the bushes? It is very rocky where the forsale sign is, but we would like to get our house sold soon…any ideas?

I have a St. Joseph statue in my kitchen window. I didn’t use the prayers that came with the statue; I simply asked his intercession each morning.

Our for sale sign went up on Monday, Aug. 15th (the Assumption!), realtors started showing the house on Weds the 17th and we were offered a full price contract on Saturday the 20th.

My mom also put a statue in her window (she’s moving in w/ us) and sold her house quickly. Unfortunately her buyer backed out 10 days before settlement.

Personally, I don’t think it’s how, where or if you bury the statue. It’s trusting in God’s plan for you family and asking St. Joseph to intercede for you.

I am selling a house now and think that burying a statue of St. Joseph is bad superstition. However, I am grateful to this thread for reminding me to pray for his intercession!
