"Selling" your soul

First off, I know it’s impossible to sell your soul. But it’s still a mortal sin to attempt to sell your soul.

Anyways, is it as easy to sell your soul by saying (and I do not mean the following, by the way) “I sell my soul to you?”

On one hand I kinda think yes, but on another no. And of course, you have to mean what you say, correct?

Your soul belongs to God. You cannot “sell” it.

You can devote yourself to Satanic worship, cut yourself off from God, please Satan and gain earthly rewards…but ultimatly your soul is still God’s. You have until the moment of your death to choose Him, even if you’ve chosen to cut yourself off before now. It’s a dangerous proposition, becuase we often die without having a chance to confess.

You cannot sell your soul but to “sell” your soul in a human term you are basically rejecting God’s love.

You are saying to Him, I do not want this gift you have given me.

To me, the idea of selling your soul is a much more subtle thing than stories would have us believe.

It is the persistent pursuit of worldly gains over years and even a lifetime. It is consistently choosing another god: fame, wealth, power, whatever; all the while ignoring or deliberately turning away from the one true God in order to do so. …If you follow this course in your life, you do give what is good in you away.

It should also be pointed out that declaring openly your contempt for your soul; is an open invitation for evil to enter your life and wreak havoc.

Though the soul is not a product to be sold, it does have a shelf life: heaven or hell.

No words can sell the soul; but, words are a gateway to its shelf life: one’s words can lead the soul to heaven or one’s words can lead the soul to hell.

We must be careful what we say, it might lead to an undesired way.

I think the above posters have summed it up pretty well. Basically, you cannot sell your soul per se, but you can certainly reject God in exchange for earthly pleasures, perhaps even with the help of Satan for all I know.

So in theory if one says they sell their soul to Satan, which sadly, I’m sure people have done, what they are really saying is they pledge their allegience to Satan and reject God. But the decision is not final until death, and even then the soul does not belong to Satan, but rather God allows the person to remain for all eternity with the entity he or she has chosen.

Not quite as you describe it BUT EVERYTIME anyone comits a Mortal Sin; “selling there soul” is a accurate way to express what has happened.

So basically, it isn’t a grave matter in itself to say, “I sell my soul” (again, I do not mean what was just said -just in case!), but rather a suggestion that you plan to not worship God?

And if you follow what you just suggested, then you have sinned, right?
