I am considering replying to a letter to my local paper about embryonic stem cell therapy. I originally posted this thread under “moral theology”, but I think it belongs in this forum…

I am unsure of several points concerning the Senate bill that will allow additional funding for embryonic stem cell research:
Code:
-The exact name of the bill, & if the bill somehow limits research to only those embryos that will be "discarded anyway" (I realize this is a calculated lie that is designed to get people to think that the destruction of embryos will stop with these so-called "spare" embryos... but, I need to know if this particular bill has any restrictions on what embryos can be used)

-If there are any states other than Missouri that allow therapeutic cloning
If anyone can help me out with any of these issues, I would greatly appreciate it…

This should answer a lot of your questions. Please read it and let me know what else you have questions about.

Oops. I may have given you the wrong story – one on Cloning rather than strict ESCR funding. You asked about cloning, so that link might help. It exposes some of the dishonesty used in these bills.

BUT…Here’s another link on the bill recently passed about ESCR using embryonic humans (i.e., human embryos) deliberately created and subsequently abandoned by their parents for research (S. 5), here’s a link to the bill itself (I think).

A useful analogy might be to talk about dismembering death row inmates for scientific testing because “they’re going to die anyway”. Same logic.

Hope that helps.

RyanL, thank you SO much for all of the info & great links! I really appreciate it. I’m pretty weak on legal & political issues, but if I’m understanding it correctly, the Feinstein-Hatch Bill sounds like they are trying to do the same thing fedrerally in the Senate that the bio-tech industry was able to do in Missouri. I’m still shocked that they were able to lie to the voters & make them think they were banning all cloning, when in fact they enshrined it in their constitution. It’s scary to think they can do the same thing federally. I was completely unaware of this new bill. This is all so technical for most of us to understand, & when they deliberately deceive & use words like “somatic cell nuclear transfer”, the people have no idea what they’re voting for…

Do you happen to know if the Senate voted on HR 3 (I think that’s the bill to increase funding of hESCR) yet? I thought they had, but someone wrote to our paper about it yesterday. You’ve helped me so much, thanks for your time!

Try this link to explore bills being discussed in Congress regarding the stem cell issue as well as therapeutic cloning. You can also link on to the exact transcripts during the hearings.

Very interesting.
