The US mainstream media generally ignores most foreign stories not involving mass casualties or some significant impact on USA. In order to understand this particular story, you have to have a basic understanding of what the Orthodox Church is and how it is organized. Most Americans, including most Roman Catholics, don’t have this understanding and aren’t all that interested.

Shoot, I’d guess that way over 90% of all American reporters don’t have a clue that there is a Serbian Orthodox Church, and probably don’t know that there’s an Orthodox one for that matter. Heck, most of them would likely give you a blank stare if you noted that not all Catholics are Roman Catholics.

For that matter, if a story isn’t photogenic and somehow interesting to a mass audience, it’s not going to get reported.

I don’t watch much television news, but has the story about the Russian Orthodox received much tv time? I’d be really surprised if it had.
