Hey Jon! Hope all is well at your end!

Thank you all for your responses. I found it interesting when my husband and I compared our choices that we had different rankings. I thought after twenty years of sitting next to him in Church we would have pretty much the same picks. Needless to say, it is interested that God still meets both of our needs at Church.

I will be out of pocket for the next few days since I am flying up North for my aunt’s funeral. Please keep her family in your prayers. She died after just about a 4 year fight against ovarian cancer–a sucky disease.

And it isn’t that contemporary issues aren’t important to Christians. The problem is so often, and even unintentionally, a pastor/priest can allow personal or political bias to enter in, instead of helping believers to understand that Christ and His Church can be our guide through contemporary issues, just as they have “contemporary issues” of any other time.

1. Preach the absolute need of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, and of conversion to God - IOW, set forth Christ Crucified. St. Paul preached with power - how many preachers & homilists do so today ?​

All else is secondary.

Oh, I agree. I think most “contemporary issues” are a matter of conscience (and before I get harpooned by the abortion-on-every-thread posters; NO, I don’t consider abortion on demand a “contemporary issue” I consider it the sin of murder. OK?) If people are reminded often to emphasize daily Christian life and a pastor challenges his flocks existing notions and habits then the contemporary issues will take care of themselves.

Emphasize the Gospel using sound theological principles, while showing how this applies to our daily lives today. Lessons from the past can bring comfort to listeners today - just knowing that our struggles are the same as the early Christians (the Gospel times) can be comforting.

You ask about challenging exisiting notions and habits. This presumes that the listeners’ notions and habits deserve challenge. I don’t know why, but I assumed this is about social issues. (prejudice, etc) If you’re talking about the notion that “I go to church therefor I’m better than those who don’t–too bad they won’t see Heaven”, then I’m with you. If you’re talking about assuming that all white people have prejudices that need to be challenged, I’m sending you to diversity training.
