The Servants of Mary were started by St. Juliana Falconeri in the 13th Century. St. Juliana followed the Servite rule at home while caring for her aged mother. When she died, Juliana and her friends gathered in another house and started the first Servite (Third Order Regular) active convent. They wore a black gown with shortened sleeves and a white veil. Because of the sleeves, they were nicknamed the Mantellate. St. Juliana served as superior until her death. Since she was afflicted with vomiting at the time of death, she asked that a Host be put on a corporal, and placed over her heart. She entered eternity on June 19.
Before Vatican II, the Servite sisters wore a reproduction of this host on their habits, over the heart.
