Service to a Protestant church?

Hello all,

I am a former church organist looking to get another organ job. There is a United Church of Christ church looking for an organist, and I am curious as to whether I would be permitted to work there in that function. I would never lose my identity as a Catholic, and if they have some kind of communion I know not to receive it. I have already applied to a Roman Catholic parish, which of course is my first choice.

Is it permissible?
 
If it weren’t for the fact that it’s a paid service, it would definitely cross the line of worshipping with Protestants; it still may. I wouldn’t do it personally, but I think you should ask a good priest advisor rather than the users of CAF.
 
Wow, that’s a tough position to be in. While I absolutely understand your desire to a) play your beloved instrument and b) provide for yourself and your family, I would be very cautious playing an instrument that is functioning in the worship of a faith outside the Church. Participating in their music ministry, it would seem, really means participating in their religion. Especially for a faith that, since it isn’t based around the Sacraments, is centered heavily around that music/worship element.

Perhaps consulting a very wise, orthodox priest would be best? If it’s not actually putting you out on the street and there is a possibility to support yourself without allowing your musical talent to contribute to something inappropriate, I would avoid it.

I’ll pray for your situation and that God may guide you to a job where you can feel that you’re glorifying Him instead. :byzsoc:
