Serving at a N.O. mass - help!

Hello all,

I volunteered to serve at my local N.O. Mass for the upcoming roster a few months ago. About two weeks later I went to my first Latin Mass and have only been back to the local Parish Mass once or twice. I still want to fulfill my comittment to the parish Priest and meet all the dates on the serving roster, and Father is holding me to it too. I will be serving this Sunday morning, but have become a little hazy on all that I am supposed to do. I served at the N.O. mass as a boy, and again at high school, but that is going back a bit.

Does anyone have a link to a site that gives the guidlines as to when to bring the cruets, washing the priest’s hands etc, for the whole Mass?

Also, when the roster is served out in 3 months, I really do not want to serve at this Mass, as my wife and I are finding the Latin Mass far more nourishing spiritually. I am not sure how to tell the Priest that I will only be serving for this 3 month roster period. He has warned me off the FSSP, saying that they are a fringe group, outside the mainstream of the Church. He is a nice man, and I do not want to get on the outside of any Catholic Priest. Any suggestions?

Call someone else on the roster and have them dot he serving or else tell you the priest that you are not attending that parish anymore on a regular basis and woudl rather find someone else.

Tell him the truth. Besides, FSSP is hardly a fringe group.

Thats one of the funniest things ive read on this forum.

Like someone else on this thread says, tell him the Truth about going to the FSSP Parish (im assuming thats where you go). And correct him about his grossly wrong view toward the FSSP.

Look at your heart and find out why you committed to serve the Lord by helping with the Mass. Is it about you or about Jesus and his Church? You may have chosen your cross to bear and you may have to keep doing what it is valid and licit because it is the right thing to do. However, I do not believe that you assumed that obligation forever, and after a reasonable amount of time of serving with the proper intent you should consider yourself free to stop doing it and attend a different parish.
The FSSP could be considered a fringe group outside the mainstream of the Church. That does not make it less valid or illicit. There are other rites that could be considered fringe rites or outside the “mainstream” of the Church just because of the percentage number of Catholics following those rites. The FSSP difference from the “mainstream” Church is the celebration of the Mass and some other liturgical aspects. Unlikely some schismatic groups, the FSSP priests will stand by their Pope with outmost loyalty and obedience.
I love the latest N.O., I wish it were in latin with no dance hall music etc. However, I looked at FSSP when my young son mentioned that he might become a priest. I am even planning a trip to Denton Nebraska, to show my son another aspect of the priestly life, and yes I still fully support our diocesan seminarians that will celebrate the N.O. Mass.

There are lots of books with this. In a Missal the part about it is the “Order of Mass”. At romanrite.com/mim_cont.html there is a description I wrote about the actions in the Mass.
