So, I got the Easter schedule and I am scheduled to serve at Mass on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Then, I got the 3 month schedule for Eucharist Ministers, Readers, and Servers. I am scheduled to serve a lot (some weekly) and, don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with that, but I feel like I’ll be hogging the job. I want other people to have a turn. I’m not on EVERY week, but some are 2 in a row. I did not schedule me to serve that much, the sacristan did, but I feel like other servers and people who go to that Mass I serve at will think I’m hogging the job.

Should I feel this way? I LOVE serving, but I don’t want to seem like a hog.

Maybe you got on the list because you do a good job or maybe you are more dependable! Don’t worry about what others think, if they have a problem with the schedule they can take it up with the sacristan.😉

Can’t you have more than one altar server?
Well, yes, typically there is. There are usually three during Ordinary Time, Lent, and Advent. There are typically four servers during the Easter season and Christmas season and any other big feast day.

I understand how there’s still more than one, but like I feel like someone would be like “He serves like every weekend.”

True. I think I’m on there a little more than most because I am usually the only server at the early Mass. I know a lot of people sometimes don’t show up, so the sacristan knows to come and get me. We’re good friends with each other, so that could be another reason why.

Most folks know that servers don’t set their own schedules.

Thank you for serving.

Everything has a purpose and you don’t sound like your hogging, it just sounds like your needed, there is a difference. Hope you do well!

I really like serving on the altar because it makes me feel closer to our Lord. I don’t know why, maybe because you’re in such a holy area at that moment, but it feels very empowering. I love dressing the altar, it’s sort of like “preparing the feast.” I had to serve a Wednesday night Mass not too long ago and when I had to dress the altar (it’s taking the chalice and the cloths and setting them up on the altar if you don’t get what I mean), and when I was doing it, it was COMPLETELY silent. Usually on a Sunday or a Holy Day there is organ music and singing, and that soothes me, but since there was NOTHING, I began hyperventilating and was saying to myself “Don’t screw up…everyone’s watching…don’t screw up!” It was a little scary. I had to catch my breath after I did it.
