Serving God vs serving my parents?

The parents of OP want him to be active in a activity of a heretic and schismatic church, this is very sinful and he has the obligation not to go there. Saying this is not a sin is just relativism. The holy Catholic Church has a long history of Saints that rejected to go to Godless activities. We have many holy Martyrs who have been killed by there own parents because the have been disorient.

Andre, you may have missed some context. The OP is not Catholic yet; he/she is still a minor. It is more important for him/her to obey the parents at the current time.

Mt 8:22 “Let the dead bury the dead”
As soon you found the Church you have to turn around as soon as possible.
There have been martyr who have not even been baptised.

You probably didn’t realize, but the Catholic Church has long since (by which I mean, prior to Vatican II 😉 ) condemned the idea that a person must belong to a Catholic Church to be saved, as a heresy. So, it’s dangerous to imply that the OP is committing any kind of grave sin by participating in the Christmas play at his parent’s church.

Thank you guys for all your answers. I just talked with my Mom about how she knows I am becoming Catholic and she signed me up for the play anyway. I told her I go to mass on Wednesday and I can’t go to practice etc… And how she should get me out of it. She said she will think about it which means she doesn’t like it but she will do it!
I’m glad to read that you are sticking up for your new faith, even if it means drawing a line with your parents. I think it was pretty rude of your parents to sign you up to perform in a play, and since they know you like to go to Mass on Wednesdays (is that to get out of going to Wed. Bible Study at the Baptist Church, as well as going to Mass?) it seems like a deliberate move to undercut you. Parents don’t have a pass to do the wrong thing and teens have to obey no matter what!

The way you describe these plays - they don’t sound very respectful of Jesus, Mary or Joseph. I don’t know what the other posters are thinking - that you should just go along with something because you’re under 18? I don’t believe that you should. Stand up for your beliefs and for the truth! Be polite but firm with your parents. Do not be rude in return, just stand fast and remain firm!

👍

Welcome Home!

Hi Brockman, I think (and I say this with utmost respect to them) that some of my fellow posters were a bit… rash… in their responses to you.

You are beginning the conversion process to becoming Catholic (and welcome home by the way!). That entails certain obligations, such as attending Mass. However, it also entails certain restrictions. One of those restrictions is that, while we are allowed to attend and OBSERVE the worship of others, we are not to ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE. I’m guessing this “Christmas play” was to take part in conjunction with some Baptist Christmas service.

That makes it sketchy. You’re only beginning the conversion process, sure, but at the same time, you’re not to participate in other denominations’ worship because it gives the appearance that you accept their worship as valid and equal to the mass (aka, causes scandal to the church). So yes, you have some theological ground on which to object to taking a role in this play.

That being said, it’s not the end of the world either. As you’ve done here, you should start all of these situations by having a RESPECTFUL and LOVING talk with your parents. You should explain that, as you no longer hold Southern Baptist views, that you are uncomfortable with participating in the play and feel like you’d be insulting the other congregation members by doing so. Tell them that your respect for their faith is what drives you to NOT want to falsely participate. Then, if they insist anyway, go ahead and participate… at least then you’ll know they had your (name removed by moderator)ut and made their informed decision.

Also, your parents are uncomfortable with you becoming Catholic, but have you thought about explaining the rules of posting and then recommending that they come here to learn a bit about your choice? Perhaps dispelling the smoke will show that there are no demons hiding in the dark…

This is, I think, the best way of going about it. This is a difficult situation, and must be treated gingerly for you to avoid mutilating relationships but still follow your new faith.
