I’m looking for the proper response to an SDA relative on this subject. Am I correct when a say papal authority as given to peter by Jesus when he said “what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven”, etc. allows the pope to change that worship day to sunday. I understand it was a gradual change until Constatine made it official. I understand also why Sunday in lieu of Sat.
And whats the response when he points out the scripture that says something to the effect “heaven and earth will pass but not one iota of my word will pass” To my relative this means that absolutly nothing at all should be changed, not even the rearranging the numbering of the commandants.
Also whats the significance when Jesus is asked “what commandants must we keep” and in his reply he does not mention the Sabbath.

I wonder which of the disciples were SDA? There had to have been one there at the time or how else would the present day SDA know if Catholics “changed” anything?

First off - you will probably have better luck posting this in the Apologetics forum. I’ll take a stab at it - but I really do encourage you to re-post this there, or ask the mods to move it for you - if they don’t on thier own 😛 .

Yes - Authority was given to Peter with that pronouncement, and it was followed by the rest. Acts bears this out.

If you look at scripture - everyone said, following the resurrection ‘The Lords day’ including references to which day that was see HERE as well as Christs proclamation that “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” Mark 2:27. The idea being that God wanted ONE DAY devoted to Him - as Paul states in Romans Ch 14, especially vs. 6. The entire Chapter would be a good read for SDA’s.

regarding the commandments - please see HERE for a very good explanation.

“Heaven and Earth shall…” and Nothing has. As the link I sent you states - there was no numbering system in scripture until around the 13th century (I think) so order does not matter - content does. That is being observed.
MT 22:37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.
and
GAL 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
That One Word is LOVE.

Meaning, everything is fulfilled with those two commandments, if we do them perfectly - which we don’t - which is why we are also told to:
JAS 5:16 Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.
1JN 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.
Hope this helps some

Peace

You’re at the right place Catholic Answers has the answer. 👍

To be honest, I LOVE assertions like this because I can smile and say “Yep! You betcha! You are absolutely right!”

See, if the New Testament Christians were Catholics, (and they were and that can be verified by the writings of 2,000 years of Christians from the apostles to Polycarp and Ignatius of Antioch all the way down the line to modern Catholism.) then it really is no problem whatever to look at the passages of the NT from Acts on that tell us that we ceased being Jews in Acts and ceased going to temple and celebrating the sabbath.

Christians celebrate and worship on the first day of the week because we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, not the OT sabbath laws.

The article SMK cites above really sums it up very well in its opening paragraphs when it says:
**Sabbath or Sunday?
Some religious organizations (Seventh-Day Adventists, Seventh-Day Baptists, and certain others) claim that Christians must not worship on Sunday but on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. They claim that, at some unnamed time after the apostolic age, the Church “changed” the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday.
However, passages of Scripture such as Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Colossians 2:16-17, and Revelation 1:10 indicate that, even during New Testament times, the Sabbath is no longer binding and that Christians are to worship on the Lord’s day, Sunday, instead.
The early Church Fathers compared the observance of the Sabbath to the observance of the rite of circumcision, and from that they demonstrated that if the apostles abolished circumcision (Gal. 5:1-6), so also the observance of the Sabbath must have been abolished. The following quotations show that the first Christians understood this principle and gathered for worship on Sunday. **
The scriptural evidence is right there and then there is the testimonies of the ECF, again confirming that what we believe today comes accurately down to us from the apostles and the New Testament as opposed to Ellen G. White.
Pax tecum,

This is their argument for sabbath worship:

#1 In Genesis, God blessed the 7th day and declared it to be holy and a day of rest. They say there’s something special and sacred about the seventh day because God blessed it?

#2 Bottom line is that it’s one of the 10 commandments and since none of the other 9 commandments changed why would the commandment about remembering to keep holy on the sabbath change? To them it’s just as if the Church changed any of the other commandments that were written in stone.

BTW the 7th Day Adventists also think that the Church is the Whore of Babylon and the Pope is the antiChrist

Yes, tell them they are right. The Catholic Church even in New Testament times changed the day of worship to Sunday because it was the day of the Lord’s resurrection. The church had this authority from Christ. So the Church began Sunday as the weekly day of worship. So what?

(BTW, how do the SDA’s know that every seventh day has been counted consistenly for all the weeks since creation? Are they sure that Saturday today really corresponds to the seventh day of creation? Has anybody been keeping track all those years? And didn’t the Church (Catholic Church–yes!) actually change the calendar at one point in history, so that we lost 10 days? Now that would mess up the count anyway.)

(Another thought: the Sabbath was kept in the Jewish calendar, which doesn’t corresponed to the Gregorian calendar. So I’m reasonably sure that there is no way of knowing if Saturday is actually the true ‘Sabbath’ by counting every seven days since the seventh day of creation.)

VERN DUENAS:
…allows the pope to change that worship day to sunday. I understand it was a gradual change until Constatine made it official…
I’m not an apologist but have recently had some conversations with an SDA so here is something to keep in mind: The Pope that “changed” the day from Saturday to Sunday, if any Pope did, was Peter! The Church from its earliest days worshipped on Sundays. SDAs like to make it look like some Pope hundreds of years later made an arbitrary change, but that is not true. Since the time of the Apostles, Christians have celebrated the Lord’s Day. And it was not “a gradual change until Constantine made it official”. That is part of SDA propaganda. The day was changed by the Apostles, not by Constantine.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the “seventh” day argument is moot for many of us, like myself, because to me, Sunday is the seventh day, anyway. I never think of Sunday as the first day of the week, it’s always the last day of the week before. So you can look at Sunday as the first day or the last day and either way, it’s ok, Sunday is the day Christians celebrate the Lord and rest.

IMO only and good luck with your relative. SDAs can be very stubborn and they are taught a lot of propaganda.

You’re right, Sunday IS the seventh day of the week. That’s the way many calendars now show it. That’s why Saturday-Sunday is called the week-END.

Also ask if
“but not one iota of my word will pass” means that absolutly nothing at all should be changed what where the apostles doing dropping the requirement for circumcision - see Acts 15. Do they still practice circumcision?

Having grown up as a 3rd generation Adventist, and being educated in their schools, I know what a challenge you face with your Adventist friend. I have been Eastern Orthodox, but am on my way into the Catholic Church. What happened with me, is I finally got hold of out of print material that destroyed the credability of their “prophet”, Ellen White. Once I became convinced of this, I began to look elsewhere at how the majority of the “churches” understood the new testament. The first council of the Church in Acts 15, I had never understood. Once I had a proper understanding of this, I saw that this was applied to all the Mosaic “ceremonial laws”, the 4th commandment being chief among them. I also realized I was a gentile and not a Jew, and was not bound by their laws. I finally understood I there were two covenants, and Old and a New Covenant and I am under the new covenant. Hopefully, this will help as a starting point. I would be happy to talk to your friend if you think I can help.

I would refer your relative to Early Church fathers, they are much more authoratative than you and I.
VERN DUENAS:

The pope did not change this, the early Christian church changed it. Gentiles were never expected to keep the Sabbath unless they converted and underwent circumcision. When the early Church ruled that Christians did not have to be circumcised, they effectually also ruled that Christians do not have to keep the Sabbath. (granted there are many other indicators of this). Further, Rev 1:10 is a direct reference to Sunday as the Lords Day, this phrase was applied to Sunday in the First century.
VERN DUENAS:
I understand it was a gradual change until Constatine made it official.

I think you misunderstand what happened, and what Constantine did for the church. If you read the historical records, Constantine merely made it legal to practice Christianity, he did not change the practices or beliefs of Christianity…

You are coming at this from a very protestant prospective. For example, you are assuming that the ten commandments were “rearranged”? I would submit that the RCC has numbered them this way for approx. 2000 years, if either you or your relative do not want them renumbered, they should be Catholic. Further, God’s Word (Christ, John 1) will never pass away it was deposited in the Church 2000 years ago, and then codified in tradition and scripture as the church developed. IF your relative really believes that Christ’s word will not pass away then he would be Catholic and hold fast to the pillar and foundation of all truth, which scripture says is the Church, not
an SDA’s interpretation of scripture.

SDA2RC is very good in his arguments.

May I add then when one appeals to the historical
record, which is the writing of ‘The Early Church Fathers’, they are talking about the writings of some
of the Early Churches first Bishops who were tutored
by the Apostles.

In addition, when a Catholic appeals to protestant
sensibilites to go read the historical record, he is
usually told that those things do not carry the weight of
scripture and easily dismisses them.

However, Catholics have said all along, as does the Bible , that you are to obey tradition and things that
have been handed down and taught to you from the Apostles. Much of this was verbal and the ‘Early Church Fathers’ and their writings attest to authenticity of the Catholics Churchs teachings,
that may not be in the Bible, but came from the Apostles and are in the earliest recorded history of
the Church that we get from these ‘Fathers’.
Moreover, some of these writings have only been
discovered in the last 200 years, and bear full
truth that the Early Church was Catholic and not some semblence of Protestant beliefs.

Catholicism is actually intellectually provable and true.
In effect, each Church besides the Catholic Church was started by a Bible and a ‘Man’/person
who claimed some insight into exact Christian truth
and each one does specifically claim that their faith
has been restored to that of the Early Church.
However, they either ignore the writings of the Early Church or dimiss them with no intellectual reasoning for it.

OK, everyone take a deep breath…the Catholic Church did NOT change the Sabbath. Saturday is still the Sabbath day, however, the Sabbath is a day of rest given to the Jews, not a day of worship. Christians are not bound by Sabbath observance anymore than they are by the other 612 commandments that the Jewish people were given…
Ask your SDA friend if they observe all 613 Commandments and remind them that if they try to seek justification in observence of the Law, but are guilty of breaking the least of the laws, they are guilty of all the laws.

I assure you they will argue that “Sabbath rest” came before the law, and applies to everyone…by that arguement, so did circumcision. You’ll not convince an SDA they are wrong…defend our position if you must, but unless they are having doubts anyhow, they will not be convinced.

The Christian day of Worship has indeed been established as Sunday, the Lord’s day. The Church does indeed have that authority.

Hi,

From the CCC - although they may not, in fact probably won’t, recognize it as an authority - you can still use the explanation:

CCC - Sabbath Day
2174 Jesus rose from the dead "on the first day of the week."104 Because it is the “first day,” the day of Christ’s Resurrection recalls the first creation. Because it is the “eighth day” following the sabbath,105 it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by Christ’s Resurrection. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord’s Day (he kuriake hemera, dies dominica) Sunday:
Code:
We all gather on the day of the sun, for it is the first day [after the Jewish sabbath, but also the first day] when God, separating matter from darkness, made the world; and on this same day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead.106
References:
104 Cf. Mt 28:1; Mk 16:2; Lk 24:1; Jn 20:1.
105 Cf. Mk 16:1; Mt 28:1.

Hope that helps

with regards to the sentence I’ve highlighted in bold above…the following article by James Akin is a good one to absorb:

ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/NUMBERNG.htm

basically, what the SDA needs to come to grips with is that the “ten” commandments are not “numbered” within the pages of Scripture (keep in mind, the division of the Bible into “Chapters and Verses” was devised by Catholic Cardinal Hugo in the mid-thirteenth century) and as James Akin discusses there are three different ways inwhich the “more than 10 commandments” listed in Exodus 34:28 (and again with slightly different wording in Deuteronomy 4:13, 10:4) have been TRADITIONALLY grouped into “ten commandments”.

The other thing the SDA in the western hemisphere of the world must comes to grips with is that they have no way of knowing “from Scripture ALONE” when the “seventh day” should actually be obeserved:

From another thread:
For the sake of argument, let’ allow that the Jews in Israel have faithfully observed “every seventh day” since the time of Exodus, such that, when sundown Friday evening occurs in Israel the “true” seventh day begins.
Depending on where the date line is established, “Sundown Friday evening in Israel” can either be “sunrise Friday morning in North America” (if the seventh day occurs first in Israel) or “sunrise Saturday morning in North America” (if the seventh day occurs first in North America).
Assuming that Israel observes the “true” seventh day - how does mankind on the opposite side of the earth know whether their observance of the seventh day follows or precedes that of Israel?
see: A History of the International Date Line
at phys.uu.nl/~vgent/idl/idl.htm

This usually gets them quieted down for nowhere in Scripture does God reveal “the date line” and so, if christian Sabbath Keepers “in the west” want to make sure they’re observing the “true Sabbath” they have best moved to Israel.

For a non-Catholic refutation of Sabbatarianism see:
churchofgodcarmichael.org/sabbath/sabbcontents.html

linked from the following Catholic website:
theotokos.co.za/adventism/sabbath.html

Before I’d go into a lot of “proof texting” into a Catholic vrs SDA debate, I’d simply respectfully insist that they first answer “with Scripture ALONE” where has it been revealed that God has established “a Date Line”…other issues come up when we consider that in the Northern most reaches of the earth (eg., Alaska) the sun doesn’t set below the horizon for months during the summer and doesn’t rise above the horizon for months during the winter. Since the “seventh day” in Scripture is measured from “sundown friday evening until sundown Saturday evening” how do SDA’s in Alaska observe “the Sabbath”?

Bascially, from what I have read from SDA websites, the observance of Sabbath in the northermost reaches of the earth is decided on “ecclesiastical (church) authority”…in other words the elders get together and decide “when” they will observe “the seventh day”…which leads us to the question, then which “church” truly has that kind of authority to decide such an issue? As Catholics we know where this leads 🙂

hope this helps

Simply ask your SDA friend to prove that the mark of the beast is a day of worship.

Read the council in Acts 15 which deals with obigations of gentiles, no saturay worship is demanded.

As someone above pointed out Romans 14 makes it plain that christians worshipped on both saturaday and sunday.

If you go to newadvent.org and search on Lord’s Day you will find many church father’s quotes about the church worshipping on the Lord’s day which is sunday well before 325 AD.

Adventists try to get around Col 2:16 by claiming that the day of worship is a moral law when in fact it is even according to jewish sources a Ceremonial law.

Colossians 2:16
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

The Didache an early church manual states,
Chapter 14. Christian Assembly on the Lord’s Day.
But every Lord’s day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one who is at odds with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: “In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, says the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations.”

this document explains why we worship on sunday,

CHURCH FATHERS: Registrum Epistolarum, Book XIII, Letter 1
Book XIII, Letter 1
To the Roman Citizens.
Gregory, servant of the servants of God, to his most beloved sons the Roman citizens.
It has come to my ears that certain men of perverse spirit have sown among you some things that are wrong and opposed to the holy faith, so as to forbid any work being done on the Sabbath day. What else can I call these but preachers of Antichrist, who, when he comes, will cause the Sabbath day as well as the Lord’s day to be kept free from all work. For, because he pretends to die and rise again, he wishes the Lord’s day to be had in reverence; and, because he compels the people to judaize that he may bring back the outward rite of the law, and subject the per-tidy of the Jews to himself, he wishes the Sabbath to be observed.
For this which is said by the prophet, Ye shall bring in no burden through your gates on the Sabbath day (Jerem. xvii. 24), could be held to as long as it was lawful for the law to be observed according to the letter. But after that the grace of Almighty God, our Lord Jesus Christ has appeared, the commandments of the law which were spoken figuratively cannot be kept according to the letter. For, if any one says that this about the Sabbath is to be kept, he must needs say that carnal sacrifices are to be offered: he must say too that the commandment about the circumcision of the body is still to be retained. But let him hear the Apostle Paul saying in opposition to him, If ye be circumcised, Christ profiteth you nothing (Galat. v. 2).
We therefore accept spiritually, and hold spiritually, this which is written about the Sabbath. For the Sabbath means rest. But we have the true Sabbath in our Redeemer Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. And whoso acknowledges the light of faith in Him, if he draws the sins of concupiscence through his eyes into his soul, he introduces burdens through the gates on the Sabbath day. We introduce, then, no burden through the gates on the Sabbath day if we draw no weights of sin through the bodily senses to the soul. For we read that the same our Lord and Redeemer did many works on the Sabbath day, so that he reproved the Jews, saying, Which of you doth not loose his ox or his *** on the Sabbath day, and lead him away to watering (Luke xiii. 15)? If, then, the very Truth in person commanded that the Sabbath should not be kept according to the letter, whoso keeps the rest of the Sabbath according to the letter of the law, whom else does he contradict but the Truth himself?
Another thing also has been brought to my knowledge; namely that it has been preached to you by perverse men that no one ought to wash on the Lord’s day. And indeed if any one craves to wash for luxury and pleasure, neither on any other day do we allow this to be done. But if it is for bodily need, neither on the Lord’s day do we forbid it. For it is written, No man ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth it and cherisheth it (Ephes. v. 29). And again it is written, Make not provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts thereof (Rom. xiii. 14). He, then, who forbids provision for the flesh in the lusts thereof certainly allows it in the needs thereof. For, if it is sin to wash the body on the Lord’s day, neither ought the face to be washed on that day. But if this is allowed for a part of the body, why is it denied for the whole body when need requires? On the Lord’s day, however, there should be a cessation of earthly labour, and attention given in every way to prayers, so that if anything is done negligently during the six days, it may be expiated by supplications on the day of the Lord’s resurrection.
These things, most dear sons, being endowed with sure constancy and right faith, observe; despise the words of foolish men, and give not easy belief to all that you hear of having been said by them; but weigh it in the scale of reason, so that, while in firm stability you resist the wind of error you may be able to attain to the solid joys of the heavenly kingdom.

THE EPISTLE OF IGNATIUS TO THE MAGNESIANS (107 AD) CHAP. 8:1 - 9:2 CAUTION AGAINST FALSE DOCTRINES.

“Be not deceived with strange doctrines, nor with old fables, which are unprofitable. For if we still live according to the Jewish law, we acknowledge that we have not received grace… If, therefore, those who were brought up in the ancient order of things have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord’s Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death…”

St. Ignatius of Antioch, [Epistle to the Magnesians 9] (110 A.D.): “Those who lived according to the old order of things have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the Sabbath, but the Lord’s Day, in which our life is blessed by Him and by His death.”

Justin Martyr : The First Apology (155 AD) CHAP. 67 WEEKLY WORSHIP OF THE CHRISTIANS.

“…And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray, and, as we before said, when our prayer is ended, bread and wine and water are brought, and the president in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability, and the people assent, saying Amen; and there is a distribution to each, and a participation of that over which thanks have been given (Eucharistic elements)… And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is deposited with the president, who succours the orphans and widows and those who, through sickness or any other cause, are in want, … and in a word takes care of all who are in need. But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples, He taught them these things, which we have submitted to you also for your consideration.”

TERTULLIAN : An Answer to the Jews (206 AD) CHAP. 4. Of the Observance of the Sabbath.

“It follows, accordingly, that, in so far as the abolition of carnal circumcision and of the old law is demonstrated as having been consummated at its specific times, so also the observance of the Sabbath is demonstrated to have been temporary… He predicts through Isaiah: ‘And there shall be,’ He says, ‘month after month, and day after day, and sabbath after sabbath; and all flesh shall come to adore in Jerusalem, saith the Lord;’ which we understand to have been fulfilled in the times of Christ, when ‘all flesh’–that is, every nation—‘came to adore in Jerusalem’ God the Father, through Jesus Christ His Son, as was predicted through the prophet…But the Jews are sure to say, that ever since this precept was given through Moses, the observance has been binding. Manifest accordingly it is, that the precept was not eternal nor spiritual, but temporary, which would one day cease…”

Origen

“Hence it is not possible that the [day of] rest after the sabbath should have come into existence from the seventh [day] of our God. On the contrary, it is our Savior who, after the pattern of his own rest, caused us to be made in the likeness of his death, and hence also of his resurrection” (Commentary on John 2:28 [A.D. 229]).

Victorinus

“The sixth day [Friday] is called parasceve, that is to say, the preparation of the kingdom. . . . On this day also, on account of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ, we make either a station to God or a fast. On the seventh day he rested from all his works, and blessed it, and sanctified it. On the former day we are accustomed to fast rigorously, that on the Lord’s day we may go forth to our bread with giving of thanks. And let the parasceve become a rigorous fast, lest we should appear to observe any sabbath with the Jews . . . which sabbath he [Christ] in his body abolished” (The Creation of the World [A.D. 300]).

Eusebius of Caesarea

“They [the early saints of the Old Testament] did not care about circumcision of the body, neither do we [Christians]. They did not care about observing sabbaths, nor do we. They did not avoid certain kinds of food, neither did they regard the other distinctions which Moses first delivered to their posterity to be observed as symbols; nor do Christians of the present day do such things” (Church History 1:4:8 [A.D. 312]).
