For married couples, in cases in which the circumstances are sufficiently grave to justify avoiding having another child at least temporarily, would it be morally licit for men to chemically suppress their sex drive (e.g., by taking certain antidepressants)? Or perhaps even for single men struggling with inordinate lust?

No particular reason for bringing this up except that it was mentioned in a Catholic blog I read occasionally and it got me wondering. There doesn’t appear to be any long-term harm in doing that sort of thing (the sex drive returns once the drug is discontinued) and certainly the imbalance between men and women’s sexual desire is a source of friction for some marriages which could be eased by suppressing men’s sex drive.

Drugs are not the answer.

We need to control our appetites and desires. It is a mental and spiritual battle.
